ODM Disability League Member Georgina Oketch Dies Following Short Illness
The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has announced the death of Georgina Margaret Oketch, a long-serving member of the party’s Disability League and a former nominated MCA in the Siaya County Assembly.
In a statement issued on Saturday, December 6, the party confirmed that Oketch passed away after what it described as a “short illness”, though no further details were provided regarding the exact date of her death.
“We mourn the passing on of Hon. Georgina Margaret Oketch, a member of the ODM Disability League and a former nominated MCA in the Siaya County Assembly after a short illness,” the party said.
ODM added that Oketch had been an active and respected figure within its membership. “We have lost a dedicated member of the party whose immense contribution will be missed. May she RIP,” the statement read.
Oketch previously served as a nominated MCA in Siaya County, where she was recognised for championing issues affecting persons living with disabilities and advocating for broader inclusion in local governance.
Her death was announced just hours after news emerged of the passing of another public servant — Kenya Kwanza Alliance’s nominated Member of Parliament, Denar Joseph Hamisi.
National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula confirmed that Hamisi, 56, died on Saturday morning. “It is with profound sorrow that I hereby notify the House and the entire Parliamentary fraternity of the untimely demise of Nominated Member, the late Hon Denar Joseph Hamisi, MP, who passed on today, Saturday, December 6, 2025, at about 7am,” Wetang’ula announced.
Hamisi was nominated to the National Assembly under the Amani National Congress (ANC) party following the 2022 General Election. During his tenure, he served on the Departmental Committee on Sports and Culture and the Select Committee on National Cohesion and Equal Opportunities, where colleagues praised his dedication and work ethic.
“On behalf of all Members and staff of the National Assembly, and on my own behalf, I extend heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the late Hon Denar, and to all who experienced his humility and unwavering dedication to serving the nation and community,” Wetang’ula added.
Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, former ANC party leader, also mourned the MP, describing him as a principled figure whose leadership and commitment to public service were widely respected.
The deaths of Oketch and Hamisi have prompted an outpouring of tributes from across Kenya’s political spectrum, with leaders acknowledging their contributions both at the community level and in national governance.
