Babu Owino Declares Political War Within ODM Amid Claims of Systematic Exclusion
Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino has accused the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) of systematically sidelining him despite his continued loyalty to the party and its leader, Raila Odinga. The vocal legislator voiced his frustrations during a candid interview aired on Mayienga FM, citing internal party dynamics and fears over his rising popularity as reasons behind his exclusion from key roles.
Owino alleged that, despite his steadfast support for ODM, he has been consistently overlooked for leadership positions, including basic roles at the grassroots level. “In ODM, when people were reaping fruits, I was left out. I wasn’t even given a polling station chairman position,” he remarked.
The MP, known for his strong youth following and outspoken nature, suggested that his marginalization was a deliberate effort by certain individuals within the party who feel threatened by his growing influence. “I am being attacked every morning… I know I can’t be given any position in ODM; I don’t like lying. I can’t be given because they fear I will outshine them,” he said.
Despite these grievances, Owino reaffirmed his allegiance to Raila Odinga, stating that while he is prepared to challenge other party members who oppose him, he holds the ODM leader in the highest regard. “The only person I can’t fight is Raila Odinga. But the rest, if you try crossing me, I will fight back,” he asserted.
Owino emphasized that his loyalty to ODM remains intact, even as he battles perceived internal resistance. He used his now-familiar phrase, “Baada ya Baba ni Babu,” to signal his readiness for leadership succession in the future, while acknowledging Raila’s current leadership.
The legislator further warned against continued provocation from within the party, noting that he would not remain silent in the face of political hostility. “But my colleagues, I can crush them to pieces… I cannot fear them. But only those who fight me, I’ll fight back,” he said.
In a bold challenge to the party’s leadership, Babu Owino also criticized ODM’s recent political alignment with President William Ruto. He revealed that he had received threats from some party officials for rejecting the agreement and dared the party to expel him over his stance. “I won’t support a government that oppresses the ordinary citizen,” he declared, adding that he is ready to face any consequences, including the loss of the ODM ticket in the 2027 elections.
This development marks a significant moment of tension within ODM, highlighting internal power struggles and the challenges of managing youthful political ambition within established party structures. As the 2027 general elections approach, Babu Owino’s stance could have wider implications for ODM’s internal cohesion and future leadership trajectory.
