“Change Isn’t on TikTok”: Gachagua Tells Gen Z After Kaluma Boy Fundraiser Success

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, now the leader of the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), has praised Kenya’s Gen Zs for their love and generosity towards Kaluma Boy, the 17-year-old TikToker from Othaya, Nyeri, who has captured the nation’s attention with his story of caring for his ailing father.

Speaking on Sunday, October 5, 2025, Gachagua described the empathy shown by young Kenyans as “unmatched” and told them to direct their energy and solidarity towards reshaping the country’s political landscape by registering as voters.

“I want to congratulate Gen Z for what they did in Othaya and today in Ruiru, raising funds to support their own. I urge them to register as voters because change is not in their phones or TikToks,” Gachagua said.

The DCP leader commended the swift unity displayed by the youth in mobilizing funds for Kaluma Boy’s family, saying it showed the potential of a generation that can lead with compassion and purpose. But he reminded them that social media activism while powerful must be backed by civic participation for lasting impact.

“The energy they have is extraordinary but they must realize that lasting change will only happen when they take charge of leadership through the ballot,” he added.

Kaluma Boy’s Story Inspires a Nation

Kaluma Boy, whose real name is not publicly known, went viral on TikTok after posting emotional videos of his daily routine caring for his bedridden father who had a stroke. The heartwarming clips quickly went viral and thousands of Kenyans offered financial and moral support.

In a fundraiser organized by Bishop Ben Kiengei’s Jesus Compassion Ministries, well-wishers raised Ksh2 million in 30 minutes to help the family start a business. The viral teen has since been given a full scholarship to study Sales and Marketing, specializing in digital marketing, at the East African University.

Gachagua said the story embodies the values of empathy, unity and responsibility that define the best of Kenya’s youth.

“Gen Z has proven they can lead with empathy and action. That’s the spirit Kenya needs,” he said.

The DCP leader concluded by saying if young people channel their passion and creativity into political participation they can change Kenya’s future for the better.
