Emurua Dikirr MP Johana Ng’eno Among Six Killed in Nandi Helicopter Crash
The Johana Ng’eno helicopter crash has sent shockwaves across the country after six people, including the Emurua Dikirr Member of Parliament, were killed when a chopper went down in Mosop, Nandi County, on Saturday evening.
According to sources close to the investigation, authorities recovered a mobile phone and SIM card belonging to MP Johana Kipyegon Ng’eno at the crash site. Similar gadgets said to belong to Amos Kipngetich Rotich, an officer with the Kenya Forest Service (KFS), were also found among the wreckage.
The ill-fated helicopter, registration number 5Y-DSB, crashed and burst into flames in Chepkiep, Mosop Sub-county, at around 4:45pm. The aircraft had reportedly made an emergency landing due to bad weather before attempting to take off again once conditions appeared to improve.
However, moments after liftoff, tragedy struck.
Aircraft Details and Flight Timeline
Data available on Flightradar24 indicates that the aircraft is an Airbus Helicopters H125. Records show the chopper departed Nairobi at 11:02am on Saturday, February 28. However, flight tracking data does not indicate when the helicopter landed at its intended destination or when it was scheduled to depart again.
Further data shows the aircraft had completed two additional trips earlier in the month. On February 22, it departed at 1:32pm from an undisclosed location to an unrecorded destination. On February 21, it made a trip from Nairobi to Wilson Airport, departing at 9:32am and landing at 6:16pm.
Authorities are expected to examine these records as part of the broader aviation safety investigation.
Identification of Victims Ongoing
Flashnews.co.ke has seen pictures of four passengers believed to have been seated behind the pilot during the final flight. Police are reportedly using these images to help identify the remaining occupants.
The publication has also reviewed images of the aftermath, including pictures of the deceased, which reportedly match earlier images of the individuals seen before takeoff.
Despite these developments, neither the police nor the National Assembly has officially confirmed the MP’s demise.
Johana Ng’eno’s Political Journey
Ng’eno was first elected as MP in 2013 and successfully defended his seat in both the 2017 and 2022 General Elections.
At the time of his death, he was serving as Chairperson of the Departmental Committee on Housing, Urban Planning and Public Works. In that role, he had recently led the committee in reviewing the 2026 Budget Policy Statement (BPS) and conducting oversight visits to Affordable Housing Projects.
As a chairperson of a departmental committee, he was also a member of the Liaison Committee, which coordinates and guides operations across all National Assembly committees.
In previous parliamentary terms, he served as a long-standing member of the Departmental Committee on Justice and Legal Affairs and the Public Investments Committee (PIC).
What Happens Next?
Aviation experts are expected to reconstruct the sequence of events leading to the crash. Weather conditions, mechanical performance, and pilot decisions will likely form part of the official probe.
As the nation waits for confirmation and further details, the Johana Ng’eno helicopter crash remains a developing story with far-reaching political and community implications.
