Ilhan Omar Faces Immigration Documents Probe Amid Questions Over U.S. Citizenship

U.S. Congresswoman Ilhan Omar is reportedly facing a federal investigation into her family’s immigration documents, raising questions about whether authorities could seek to revoke her American citizenship if evidence of wrongdoing emerges.

Omar, who represents Minnesota in the U.S. House of Representatives, arrived in the United States in 1995 after fleeing Somalia’s civil war with her family. She later became a naturalised American citizen in 2000.

According to the report cited by Reuters, federal agents searched Omar’s Washington home on October 12 as part of an investigation examining whether she or members of her family provided false information during immigration or citizenship proceedings.

The reported search marks a significant development in a case that could have serious consequences if investigators establish that immigration laws were violated.

Investigators Examine Immigration Records

The search warrant reportedly listed potential offences including conspiracy, making false statements on immigration paperwork and immigration fraud.

Agents also reportedly seized Omar’s personal phone, while prosecutors issued more than a dozen subpoenas, including to at least one of her relatives.

Investigators are examining whether information supplied by Omar or her family during their entry into the United States or subsequent immigration proceedings was accurate.

If authorities establish that her citizenship was unlawfully obtained, they could consider legal proceedings to revoke it. However, such action would require a legal process, and an investigation alone does not establish that a person committed an offence.

No finding of wrongdoing has been made against Omar, who has denied the allegations.

Omar Accuses Trump Administration of Political Intimidation

Omar has described the search as an act of political intimidation, accusing President Donald Trump’s administration of targeting her.

The investigation comes amid the administration’s wider efforts to tighten immigration enforcement, including pursuing individuals suspected of violating immigration laws and reviewing cases involving naturalised American citizens.

Omar has frequently been a political critic of Trump, making the reported investigation particularly contentious in the country’s ongoing debate over immigration enforcement and political accountability.

However, her accusations of political targeting remain her stated position, while the circumstances and findings of the investigation will need to be established through the relevant legal process.

Kenyan Nationals Also Face U.S. Immigration Enforcement

The case comes against the backdrop of increased attention on immigration enforcement affecting foreign nationals living in the United States, including Kenyans.

In June, reports indicated that the number of Kenyans identified for possible detention and deportation had risen from 15 to 45.

According to information attributed to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the individuals were classified as priority cases for removal over alleged immigration violations and criminal records.

The reported figures concern separate immigration cases and do not establish any connection between those individuals and the investigation involving Omar.

For now, the congresswoman’s case remains under investigation, and any decision concerning her citizenship would depend on the evidence and the applicable legal process.
