NAIROBI, Kenya – May 27, 2025 — Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has joined a growing number of opposition voices alleging the existence of a state-sponsored abduction squad targeting dissenters in Kenya. This follows the recent disappearance and reappearance of Juja Member of Parliament George Koimburi under mysterious circumstances.

Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, Musyoka rejected claims by the National Police Service (NPS) that MP Koimburi had faked his own abduction, citing a deep erosion of public trust in police institutions.

“There is an abduction squad operating in this country. We are guided by what Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua said last night — that a special team exists to eliminate opposition in Kenya,” Musyoka said. He further questioned the credibility of senior police officers, adding, “Let Kanja issue whatever statement he wants, but who will believe a police officer like him today?”

Koimburi was reportedly found in a weakened state on Monday morning in a coffee plantation in Kiambu County, a day after he went missing. According to Gachagua, who visited him at Karen Hospital, the MP was unable to speak or move his vocal cords due to exposure to an unidentified chemical agent. Gachagua also alleged that Koimburi bore soft tissue injuries consistent with torture.

The former Deputy President has previously claimed that a covert unit composed of former Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officers, Administration Police, and National Intelligence Service (NIS) operatives was behind the alleged intimidation tactics. He suggested the unit was initially formed at the height of the anti-finance bill protests in 2024 and may be employing chemical inhalants to incapacitate government critics.

Human Rights Watch Africa has also raised alarms over similar concerns. In January, during the release of the 35th Edition of its World Report, the organization named the so-called Operations Support Unit (OSU) as being responsible for a wave of abductions throughout 2024. The unit, allegedly operating from the DCI headquarters in Nairobi, has been likened to the disbanded Special Squad Unit (SSU) that operated under former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s administration.

In response to these events, Musyoka affirmed that he, alongside a team of legal experts, is actively pursuing the option of filing a case at the International Criminal Court (ICC), accusing the current government of human rights violations and forced disappearances.

The Kenyan government has yet to issue a formal response to the latest allegations. As public concern mounts, calls for an independent investigation into the alleged abduction unit and its activities continue to grow.
