Kenyan Graduate Sparks Alarm After Disturbing Street Video Emerges Weeks After University Graduation
A young Kenyan woman has sparked nationwide alarm just weeks after celebrating her university graduation, after a disturbing video surfaced showing her wandering the streets of Nyamache, Kisii County, still dressed in her academic regalia.
The clip, which has circulated widely across social media platforms, shows the barefoot graduate wearing her graduation gown, sash and academic cap while appearing disoriented and unkempt. In the footage, she can be seen talking to herself and softly singing a gospel song as she walks aimlessly through the area.
The unsettling contrast between her recent academic achievement and her current condition has triggered shock, concern and urgent calls for intervention from members of the public.
According to claims shared online, the young woman graduated from Egerton University in Nakuru approximately three weeks ago, marking what should have been the beginning of a promising new chapter in her life.
The individual filming the video can be heard reacting with visible distress as the graduate roams the streets, seemingly disconnected from her surroundings and from the future many had expected would follow her graduation.
Public Concern Grows as Reactions Flood Social Media
The footage has prompted an outpouring of reactions online, with many Kenyans urging authorities and the woman’s family to intervene swiftly amid fears of a possible mental health crisis.
“Someone get her to a mental health hospital urgently,” wrote X user Wazi Afrikan, echoing the sentiments of many who called for immediate professional care.
Another user, Pat Gudah Experience, commented: “Our friends from Kisii, we love you. But please explain this to me like I’m Karen Nyamu or Oscar Sudi,” a remark that reflected both confusion and concern surrounding the incident.
Some social media users claimed they had previously seen the woman in the area.
“So sad. I saw her last Friday passing by the Nyamache road,” wrote Ojode Ojay, suggesting the situation may have been unfolding for several days.
Dangerous Witchcraft Claims Resurface
However, the online discussion also took a more troubling turn, with some commenters attributing the woman’s condition to alleged witchcraft and dark forces—claims that continue to fuel dangerous narratives in parts of the country.
Such accusations have previously had deadly consequences in Kisii County, which has a long and painful history linked to witchcraft-related violence.
In October 2021, four elderly women—Jemima Miranga (60), Agnes Ototo (57), Sigara Onkware (62), and Siendege Mayaka (85)—were killed in Mokona Village after being accused of witchcraft.
In early 2025, justice was finally delivered when three of the attackers were sentenced to 40 years in prison, while a fourth received a 15-year sentence after the court ruled he had been a minor at the time of the attack.
Calls for Mental Health Awareness
As concern over the graduate’s welfare continues to grow, many Kenyans have renewed calls for improved mental health awareness, urging the public to reject harmful superstition-based explanations and instead focus on compassion, medical support and early intervention.
Authorities have not yet issued an official statement regarding the identity or condition of the woman seen in the video.
