MPs Outraged as Moi University Spends 7 Million on Faulty Gate While Students Live in Darkness
Lawmakers were left speechless on Wednesday after visiting Moi University where they found shocking neglect and questionable spending.
The National Assembly Public Investments Committee on Governance chaired by Wanami Wamboka found that most student hostels were in a sorry state, without basics like light bulbs. The legislators were worried about the safety of students living in such conditions.
Kuresoi South MP Joseph Tonui was blunt, “A school is as good as its management and from what we’ve seen here the management of Moi University is very questionable.”
Margaret Thatcher Library which was once the pride of the institution was flagged for poor maintenance. Equally worrying was the state of staff quarters most of which are unoccupied and dilapidated.
Hostel safety was a major concern. MP Rebecca Tonkei asked how students could feel safe walking through “dark corridors” with no fire extinguishers or lighting.
The MPs also looked into Moi University’s spending on main gates which raised questions on cost inflation. One gate costing Ksh7 million is still incomplete but fully paid for while another gate project had consumed more than Ksh25 million.
Bomachoge Chache MP Alfah Miruka said the workmanship was poor: “You can see cracks forming even before completion. The figures don’t match the work.”
Questions were also raised on a multi-purpose amphitheatre which is less than 40% complete yet has consumed a lot of resources. Lunga Lunga MP Chiforomodo Mangale faulted the university for mismanaging priorities, asking why essential projects like hostels were being sidelined.
The committee concluded by telling Moi University to stop initiating new projects until it completes existing ones, warning that continued wastage of public funds will further cripple the institution.
