ODM Faces Internal Rift as Sifuna Tipped to Run for President in 2027
A new political wave is emerging ahead of the 2027 General Election with the Kenya Moja movement hinting at fielding its own presidential candidate — and all signs point to Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna as the front runner.
The movement led by young and vocal legislators has said it will not align with either President William Ruto’s administration or the united opposition bloc led by Raila Odinga, Kalonzo Musyoka, Martha Karua and Eugene Wamalwa.
This is a big shift in the political landscape and could split the opposition vote and test ODM’s internal unity.
At a rally on Sunday, October 5, Bumula MP Jack Wamboka announced that Kenya Moja was preparing to back Sifuna in 2027.
“We are talking to Senator Sifuna and we are ready for 2027. We will not fear anyone — it’s time to make our choice,” Wamboka said.
Saboti MP Caleb Amisi echoed the same sentiments, telling Raila Odinga to let the younger generation chart a new political path.
“Baba, let us go so we can save this country. You have led us for nearly 60 years, but now it’s time for new leadership,” Amisi said.
Kitutu Chache South MP Anthony Kibagendi also said the Kenya Moja coalition — which includes legislators from different parties — wants to unseat both Ruto and Odinga’s political camps.
Despite being ODM’s Secretary General, Sifuna has been vocal against the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between ODM and Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA). He has even hinted at leaving ODM if the party endorses Ruto in 2027.
Kenya Moja’s growing influence could destabilize ODM if Sifuna and other key members decide to defect.
Some of the movement’s notable members are Babu Owino (Embakasi East), Gathoni Wamuchomba (Githunguri), Clive Gisairo (Kitutu Masaba) and Obadiah Barongo (Bomachoge Borabu). They say the government is trying to divide them but they will stay together until they get power.
“We are together and we will remain together until we take over in 2027,” one of them said.
With Kenya Moja fielding a presidential candidate, the 2027 race is going to be crowded like never before.
