Oga Obinna Shares Video of Late Singer Shalkido 30 Minutes Before His Death

Popular Mugithi singer and former Gengetone artist Shalkido ga Cucu has passed on after a fatal road accident that occurred in the wee hours of Monday, October 6. The news has sent the Kenyan entertainment industry into mourning as fans are mourning the loss of an artist who was finally finding his footing after years of struggle.

Just a few weeks before his untimely death, Shalkido was on a roll. Media personality Oga Obinna, who had been mentoring him, played a big role in getting him back on track. Obinna gave him a fully furnished house, got him an ambassadorial deal and even gifted him the motorbike that would later be involved in the crash.

Last Hours Before the Tragedy

According to Obinna, the two had spent the night of Saturday, October 4 in Thika where they did a club appearance and interacted with fans. During the night, the DJ played one of Shalkido’s songs and the singer couldn’t resist joining the crowd to perform — a moment filled with laughter, applause and joy.

As the night wound down, they decided to head home. They lost contact briefly after leaving the venue and Obinna called Shalkido who said he had already left on his motorbike. They met again at the outskirts of Thika where Shalkido led the way and Obinna and his team followed in a car.

They stopped at Ruiru Junction where Obinna filled up Shalkido’s bike to the brim — an act that would later have a heartbreaking meaning. In a video shared online, Shalkido is seen smiling brightly, wearing a yellow helmet and black jacket and thanking Obinna for his support.

“Thank you so much, boss. But I’m a good driver, right? Let’s go home now,” Shalkido said cheerfully — unaware those would be his last words. The video was taken at 4:07 a.m. 30 minutes later tragedy struck. At 4:42 a.m emergency services were called to a crash site between Githurai and Carwash near Roysambu where Shalkido had been involved in a hit and run.

Fighting for His Life

Shalkido was rushed to Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral and Research Hospital where doctors battled to save him. He didn’t make it. Medical reports show he had severe internal brain bleeding and swelling and fractured left thigh.

The music industry has since taken to social media to pay tribute to a man who was known for his laughter, humility and determination to start anew. The video of his last moments has left many fans emotional, reminding us of the fragility of life and the tragedy of a dream cut short.
