🇫🇷🇰🇪 France Makes Big Diplomatic Move as Wadid Benaabou Named New Ambassador to Kenya
France has named Wadid Benaabou as its new Ambassador-designate to Kenya, marking a fresh chapter in the diplomatic relationship between Nairobi and Paris.
Benaabou will take over from outgoing French Ambassador Arnaud Suquet, who has served in Kenya since 2022.
The incoming envoy, who previously worked as a senior adviser at France’s Court of Auditors, announced his new assignment on social media, describing the appointment as an honour.
In a message directed at Kenyans, Benaabou switched between Swahili and French, signalling his enthusiasm for the new posting.
“Habari Wakenya! I am honoured to begin my mission as France’s Ambassador-designate to Kenya. France and Kenya share a strong partnership, rooted in friendship and a shared ambition for the future. I look forward to working alongside our Kenyan partners. Niko tayari!”

Benaabou’s arrival comes at a time when France is seeking to deepen its economic footprint in Kenya, with increased interest in investments and the expansion of French companies operating in the country.
Outgoing Ambassador Suquet, meanwhile, leaves Kenya with warm memories, saying his tenure was defined by friendships and strong relationships built during his diplomatic assignment.
“My time in Kenya has come to an end, but I leave behind strong ties, great memories, and true friendships,” Suquet said.
Suquet is set to take up a new role at the French Foreign Ministry focusing on Africa after his Kenya assignment.
He previously served as France’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office in Nairobi and also represented France in Somalia.
💰 KSH106 BILLION MOMBASA PORT DEAL
Benaabou arrives as economic relations between Kenya and France continue to gain momentum.
French shipping giant CMA CGM has pledged €700 million — approximately Ksh106 billion — towards the modernisation and expansion of terminals at the Port of Mombasa.
The deal was signed during the Africa Forward Summit in Nairobi in the presence of President William Ruto and French President Emmanuel Macron.
The massive investment is expected to boost cargo-handling capacity at Mombasa and strengthen Kenya’s position as a regional trade gateway.
Before Benaabou officially assumes his ambassadorial duties, however, he must complete the formal diplomatic process, including securing Kenya’s agreement, receiving his formal appointment and presenting his credentials to President William Ruto.
His arrival therefore comes at a potentially pivotal moment — with diplomacy, trade and billions of shillings in investment increasingly shaping the Nairobi-Paris relationship.
