15 Huduma Centres Where Kenyans Can Apply for Smart Driving Licences [LIST]

The Government of Kenya has expanded smart driving licence biometric services to 15 Huduma Centres across the country making it easier for motorists to apply or upgrade their licences.

Huduma Kenya in partnership with National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) announced the roll out as part of efforts to reduce travel distance for applicants and make it more convenient for drivers.

In Nairobi the services are available at General Post Office (GPO) Huduma Centre and Kibra. Other counties with smart driving licence services are:

  • Mombasa
  • Kisumu
  • Nyeri
  • Garissa
  • Machakos
  • Embu
  • Meru
  • Kakamega
  • Eldoret
  • Thika
  • Kericho
  • Nakuru
  • Kisii

The smart driving licence replaces the old red booklet and has a microchip that stores biometric data, driver classification, traffic offence records and digital signature. These licences integrate with NTSA’s Transport Integrated Management System (TIMS) for easy verification by law enforcement and enhanced security.

To apply, you need to log in to NTSA TIMS portal using your national ID, KRA PIN and phone number. Once you select Smart DL application and pay the KSh 3,050 processing fee you can book a biometric capture appointment at a Huduma Centre of your choice. NTSA officials will collect your fingerprints, digital photograph and signature. Once processed you will receive an SMS to collect your licence.

NTSA has also updated Kenya’s driving licence categories, we are moving away from the old BCE system. Under the new framework you will need to train and qualify for specific vehicle categories. These include motorcycles (A1 for mopeds, A2 for light motorcycles, A3 for motorcycle taxis and three-wheelers), light vehicles (B1 automatic, B2 manual, B3 professional), trucks (C1 light truck, C medium truck, CE heavy truck with trailer, CD for hazardous materials), passenger service vehicles (D1 vans, D2 minibuses, D3 large buses).

Other categories cater for special endorsements (E), drivers with disabilities (F) and industrial, agricultural and construction machinery (G). Each licence class has strict age requirements, prior experience and training conditions – for instance a driver must be at least 22 years old with two years’ B2 experience to qualify for a C1 licence, while passenger service vehicle licences have higher age and experience thresholds.
