Chaos in Murang’a as MP Mary Wamaua Chased Away Over Kimorori Grounds Project

Maragua MP Mary Wamaua was on Monday afternoon chased away by angry residents at Kimorori Grounds in Kenol, Murang’a County.

Videos from the scene show a crowd of agitated residents shouting and surging towards the lawmaker as her security detail, including a police officer, escorted her away from the venue.

The drama was sparked by growing public anger over plans to develop the field with reports suggesting the government wants to put up an affordable housing project or government offices on the site.

Long time Opposition

Since 2022, residents especially the youth have been rejecting the proposal to redevelop Kimorori Grounds. The Maragua NG-CDF committee had set aside Ksh24 million to construct subcounty headquarters, an ICT centre and a modern court on the property.

But locals say the grounds is a vital recreational space that supports sporting activities and community well being. They fear losing the field will deprive young people of opportunities to nurture their talents, keep fit and avoid crime.

One resident told reporters:
“We want to grow our talents but now they are taking over this field; what will we do? Sometimes up to 15 teams train here daily. If they take it away where will we go?”

Another said the government should improve facilities at the field instead of taking it away.
“How I wish they were building washrooms and dressing rooms for us instead of destroying the whole ground,” he said.

Others said the recreational space helps them avoid antisocial behaviour while maintaining their mental well being.

Wamaua Stands Firm

Despite the backlash, Wamaua said the project will go on as planned and dismissed allegations of land grabbing.

“How can one grab the security powerhouse of a subcounty and build their own houses? We are building government offices,” she said.

The MP said the land was legally set aside and will host administrative facilities for the benefit of the community at large.

The standoff is a clear indication of the growing tension between development projects and community recreational spaces with youth leaders urging the government to find alternative land to save sports and social activities in Kimorori.
