Wanjigi Vows to Scrap 16% VAT, Introduce 5% Sales Tax in 2027 Economic Blueprint

Safina Party presidential candidate Jimi Wanjigi has proposed a radical overhaul of Kenya’s tax system by scrapping the 16 percent Value Added Tax (VAT) and replacing it with 5 percent sales tax.

Speaking on Friday, September 26, 2025, Safina Party leader said his plan is to ease the burden on ordinary Kenyans and unlock economic growth.

“Our solution to over taxation is simple: abolish the 16 percent VAT and introduce a fair 5 percent sales tax,” Wanjigi said.

According to him, the proposal will empower citizens by increasing their disposable income and spending power. He said this will inject liquidity into the economy, stimulate businesses and drive growth.

“This will ease the daily struggles of Kenyans and put money directly into people’s hands. With stronger purchasing power, families will spend more, businesses will thrive and growth will follow. This is the engine of our economic revolution,” he added.

The FIST Agenda

The tax plan is part of Wanjigi’s broader “FIST Agenda” which he launched during Safina Party’s National Delegates Conference at Ngong Racecourse on September 18, 2025. The acronym stands for:

  • Free education and healthcare,
  • Interest-free access to credit,
  • Stopping debt accumulation,
  • Tax reforms to relieve citizens.

Wanjigi outlined the vision saying his campaign is built on policies that will end economic oppression.

“That plan is the FIST Agenda: end debt, cut taxes, guarantee free education and healthcare and unlock credit so every Kenyan can thrive,” he said in a statement on X on September 19.

Rejecting Debt and Promoting Fairness

Wanjigi also vowed to reject what he called “odious debt” and stop domestic borrowing. The reforms will create a fair system where Kenyans are not burdened by what he termed political and economic colonialism.

“The people of Kenya deserve leadership that does not peddle false promises but instead guarantees prosperity, dignity and freedom,” Wanjigi said. With the 2027 General Election around the corner, Wanjigi is presenting himself as a candidate with solutions to Kenya’s economic status quo.

His plan—especially the scrapping of VAT and introducing sales tax—will surely generate questions on whether this can be done and what the long term implications on government revenue will be.
