American Fugitive Arrested in Kenya Over 2022 Fentanyl Overdose Death, Extradited to U.S.

Law enforcement authorities have arrested and extradited an American national from Kenya, wanted in connection with a deadly fentanyl overdose in the United States in 2022.

According to U.S. media reports, the suspect was apprehended in Mire, Kajiado County, on October 31, 2025, and extradited to the United States following a joint operation involving Kenya’s National Police Service and multiple international security agencies.

The investigation was spearheaded by the Kandiyohi County Attorney’s Office and the United States Attorney’s Office, with critical support from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the U.S. Marshals Service.

Following extradition, the suspect was arraigned on federal charges of unlawful flight to avoid prosecution at the U.S. District Court on Tuesday, January 6, Kandiyohi County Sheriff’s Office confirmed.

The man had initially been arrested in 2022 over the alleged overdose death of a 19-year-old woman at a residence near New London, Minnesota. An autopsy revealed that the young woman died from the effects of fentanyl, a potent synthetic opioid.

He faced multiple charges in Kandiyohi County District Court, including second-degree manslaughter, third-degree murder, second-degree drug possession, and two counts of first-degree drug sale.

After posting $300,000 (Ksh38.7 million) bail, the suspect fled the United States in violation of the bail condition, which prohibited leaving Minnesota without written court approval.

The Kandiyohi County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the man will face further federal charges in Minnesota, including conspiracy to distribute fentanyl resulting in death, distribution of fentanyl resulting in death, and possession with intent to distribute fentanyl.

This high-profile extradition comes just three months after another international fugitive, a national of Côte d’Ivoire, was deported from Kenya to the U.S. for conspiring to smuggle firearms into the country.

In a statement on Thursday, September 25, 2025, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Renson Ingonga said the extradition followed a formal request from the United States on July 24, 2025.

According to Ingonga, the Ivorian national, alongside accomplices, conspired in October and November 2018 to purchase firearms in Ohio and Maryland with the aim of illegally exporting them to Côte d’Ivoire.

“According to court records, [the suspect] and his accomplices conspired between October and November 2018 to purchase firearms in the U.S., primarily in the States of Ohio and Maryland, with the intention of illegally exporting them to Côte d’Ivoire,” Ingonga said.

The case highlights growing international collaboration between U.S. authorities and Kenyan law enforcement in tracking and apprehending fugitives involved in drug trafficking and other serious crimes.
