Caleb Amisi Faces Backlash for Offering Lunch in Exchange for Anti-Ruto Chant
Saboti Member of Parliament Caleb Amis has drawn widespread criticism after urging a crowd of residents to chant “one term” in reference to President William Ruto, promising to provide them with lunch if they complied.
The incident occurred on Sunday, November 23, 2025, in Mudete, Vihiga County, during a public gathering where Amis addressed residents on local development issues. In a post shared on his official X account later that evening, the MP recounted the moment in a dramatic appeal, which quickly sparked debate on social media and among political commentators.
“Let us all say it together – one term!” Amis reportedly told the crowd, adding that he would buy them lunch if they joined in the chant. Eyewitnesses say the remark was met with cheers and laughter from some attendees, while others appeared uncomfortable.
Political analysts have condemned the move, warning that such rhetoric could deepen divisions ahead of the next general election. “Public officials are expected to focus on policy and development rather than inciting political sentiment in exchange for personal incentives,” said Dr. Joseph Mwangi, a political science lecturer at the University of Nairobi.
Amis, who represents Saboti Constituency, has previously courted controversy with outspoken statements targeting political opponents. In this instance, residents of Mudete were reportedly caught off guard by the MP’s theatrics, which some describe as a departure from the usual focus on constituency matters.
Calls for clarification and accountability have since emerged, with civil society groups urging elected officials to maintain decorum and uphold the values of public service.
The Saboti MP has not issued further comments beyond his social media post, and it remains unclear whether he will respond to the backlash from his statements.
