Corporal Kennedy Nzuve: Family of Police Killed in Haiti Shares Details of Last Conversation
Just days after telling his family he was safe and happy in Haiti, Kenyan police officer Corporal Kennedy Nzuve died in a road accident.
Nzuve, who was part of the Multinational Security Support Mission (MSSM), died in the evening crash on the Kenscoff–Pétion-Ville road, a notorious route for ambushes and accidents. The accident happened when two armoured MaxxPro vehicles, involved in a recovery operation, lost control after one of them developed mechanical problems.
According to MSS spokesperson Jack Ombaka, Nzuve and a civilian died while eight other officers were injured, three of them critically. The injured were rushed to Lambert Santé Hospital where Nzuve was pronounced dead.
His mother Serah Ndunge said she spoke to her only son just a day before the tragedy. “We spoke on Friday, August 29. He was happy and told me he had no problems in Haiti. He even said he had grown to love the country,” she told Citizen TV. Ndunge said Nzuve was looking forward to coming home in November for his leave.
The family is devastated. A relative Faith Phillip is appealing to the government to help with the burial and bring the body back to Kenya for a dignified send off.
Born in Machakos County on March 8, 1984, Nzuve joined the National Police Service in 2005 and served with the Rapid Deployment Unit (RDU). He worked in different regions of Kenya including Baringo and Narok before being selected to be part of Kenya’s third contingent to the Haiti mission.
The MSS described him as a “brave and dedicated officer” whose service was a testament to Kenya’s commitment to global peace and security.
For his family however, the loss is personal. To them Nzuve was more than a police officer; he was a community pillar and their pride whose life was cut short in the line of duty.
