Cyrus Jirongo Death: Family Seek Answers as Allies Cast Doubt on Official Crash Account

The family of the late former Lugari Member of Parliament, Cyrus Jirongo, has called for a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding his sudden death, raising questions about his movements in the hours leading up to the fatal road accident.

Jirongo died on Saturday morning, December 13, after his Mercedes-Benz was involved in a head-on collision with a passenger bus along the busy Nairobi–Nakuru Highway. His death has sent shockwaves across the political landscape, with relatives and close allies expressing concern over what they describe as unexplained events preceding the crash.

On Sunday, December 14, family members, friends and former political colleagues gathered at Jirongo’s residence in Gigiri, Nairobi, where calls for clarity and accountability dominated discussions. Several leaders present openly questioned the official version of events, insisting that crucial details remained unresolved.

According to preliminary accounts from the bus driver involved in the collision, the former lawmaker allegedly drove onto the highway from a petrol station and veered into the oncoming lane while attempting to head towards Nairobi. The driver maintained that avoiding the collision was impossible, adding that any evasive action could have resulted in even more casualties.

However, Jirongo’s family and associates have disputed that narrative, suggesting there may be more to the incident than has so far been disclosed. One of the key questions being raised is why the former MP was in Naivasha at all, despite reportedly being expected in Nairobi several hours earlier.

Former Senator George Khaniri voiced his concerns during the gathering, questioning the unexplained change in the lawmaker’s location.

“How did he find himself in Naivasha, driving back to Nairobi? That is a mystery that must be unravelled,” Khaniri said.

A family friend echoed those sentiments, claiming the timeline of events did not add up.

“Jirongo was allegedly in Karen at around 11:45pm and was later found in Naivasha when he was not supposed to be there. That alone raises serious questions. The family is very suspicious,” the friend stated.

Former Westlands MP Fred Gumo also called on investigative agencies to deploy modern technology to reconstruct Jirongo’s final journey, insisting that surveillance systems could provide critical answers.

“We are asking investigation officers to tell us what really happened. There are cameras these days. They must have detected this car when it left Karen heading towards Naivasha, and when it turned to come back this way,” Gumo said.

The family has maintained that Jirongo left his Karen home on Friday night and was later reported dead just hours afterwards, a sequence they say demands thorough scrutiny by authorities.

An autopsy to establish the exact cause of death is expected to be conducted on Monday or Tuesday. Meanwhile, the family confirmed that the former legislator will be laid to rest on December 30 at his Lumakanda home, where he will be buried next to his late parents.

Cyrus Jirongo was a prominent political figure and businessman, having served as Lugari MP and held various influential roles in public life. His sudden death has reignited debate around road safety, accountability and transparency in high-profile accident investigations.
