DCI Investigates Gachagua as Oscar Sudi Hints at Looming Arrest

Kapsaret MP Oscar Sudi has said former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua will be arrested by the government after a series of arrests of his political allies who are accused of supporting recent anti-government protests.

Sudi, a close ally of President William Ruto, made the remarks during a political event in Meru on Saturday, saying the crackdown on individuals associated with Gachagua and the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) will continue. The arrests, he said, are meant to protect national security and not political.

“After we get all of them, we will come for you,” Sudi told Gachagua. “You cannot be funding destruction of people’s property and inciting hate, bad politics.”

This comes as Kenya Kwanza’s leadership is divided and tensions are high after the June 25 protests which saw destruction of public and private property.

Gachagua spoke separately on July 6 and confirmed two youth leaders from DCP were arrested and re-arrested in connection with the protests. He accused President Ruto of personally directing the DCI to target his allies, saying several governors allied to the President are involved in the arrests.

On June 30, DCI Director Mohammed Amin issued a statement saying law enforcement had launched a massive operation to arrest individuals linked to theft of police guns and destruction of critical infrastructure during the protests. By Monday, 485 people had been arrested, 448 charged and 37 are still under investigation.

When asked about political interference, Amin said no one is above the law, including Gachagua. “Rigathi Gachagua does not have immunity from prosecution,” he said. “If in our investigations he is found to have been involved in criminal activity, then action will be taken against him.”

Despite the allegations and political rhetoric, the DCI has not issued any summons to the former Deputy President.

The developments show rising political temperatures in the ruling coalition and a widening crackdown on dissent particularly on those perceived to be aligned to Gachagua. More arrests or legal action may follow in the coming days.
