DCI Kills Key Suspect Linked to Viral Spring Valley Restaurant Robbery During Joska Shootout

Armed Robbery Suspect Linked to Viral Spring Valley Restaurant Attack Killed in Shootout as Detectives Hunt Accomplices

A man believed to be a key suspect in the viral armed robbery at a popular restaurant in Nairobi’s Spring Valley area has been shot dead following a confrontation with detectives in Joska, Machakos County.

In a statement issued on Monday, July 13, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said the suspect was killed after allegedly opening fire on officers who had tracked him to a house where he was reportedly hiding.

The operation, carried out jointly by detectives from DCI Headquarters and DCI Matungulu, followed what investigators described as credible intelligence indicating that the suspect had taken refuge at his girlfriend’s residence in Joska Town, believing it would shield him from arrest.

According to the DCI, detectives surrounded the house before identifying themselves and ordering those inside to surrender peacefully.

However, investigators said the suspect allegedly responded by firing multiple shots at the officers through a kitchen window, prompting detectives to return fire in what the agency described as an act of self-defence.

The exchange of gunfire ended after officers secured the premises and entered the house, where they found the suspect with fatal gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

During a search of the house, detectives recovered a Beretta pistol loaded with four rounds of 9mm ammunition, additional live rounds, spent cartridges and three mobile phones believed to be of investigative value.

Suspect Linked to Viral Spring Valley Restaurant Robbery

The DCI said preliminary investigations have strongly linked the deceased to the brazen daylight robbery at a restaurant along General Mathenge Road in Spring Valley, Westlands, an incident that triggered widespread public outrage after CCTV footage circulated widely on social media.

The footage showed armed men storming the busy restaurant in broad daylight, threatening customers before stealing mobile phones and other valuables. The gang later escaped on motorcycles, leaving shocked diners behind.

The incident sparked renewed concerns over the growing boldness of armed criminal gangs operating within Nairobi and its surrounding counties.

“Preliminary investigations strongly link the suspect to the recent daylight robbery along General Mathenge Road in Spring Valley, Westlands, where armed thugs terrorised diners, snatching phones and valuables before fleeing on motorcycles,” the DCI said.

Investigators believe the deceased was part of a larger criminal syndicate suspected of carrying out a series of violent robberies across Nairobi, Kiambu and Machakos counties.

Forensic Analysis Underway

The recovered firearm has since been submitted to the National Police Service Forensic Laboratory, where ballistic experts will examine whether it was used in other robberies or violent crimes reported in recent months.

The three mobile phones recovered during the operation are also expected to provide investigators with crucial evidence, including communication records and possible links to other members of the suspected criminal network.

Manhunt for Remaining Gang Members

Even as detectives celebrate what they describe as a major breakthrough, the investigation remains active.

The DCI confirmed that a manhunt has been launched for other suspects believed to have participated in the Spring Valley robbery and several other violent attacks.

Police warned that the remaining members of the gang are still at large and should be considered dangerous as efforts intensify to dismantle the criminal network.
