“Don’t Re-Elect My Father,” Cameroon President’s Daughter Tells Citizens
Brenda Biya, the daughter of Cameroon’s long time president Paul Biya, has told citizens not to re-elect her father in the upcoming presidential election on October 12, 2025.
During a TikTok Live session, Brenda, who is popularly known online as “King Nasty,” said her father has plunged Cameroon into decades of poverty, unemployment and stagnation. This is a rare public rebuke from within the president’s own family and adds to the debate around his leadership and the future of the country.
Paul Biya has been in power since 1982 and is one of the world’s longest serving leaders and the oldest serving head of state. He announced in July that he will be seeking an 8th term in office. He posted on his official X account in both English and French.
“I am a candidate for the 12 October 2025 presidential election,” Biya wrote. “Rest assured that my determination to serve you is commensurate with the challenges we face. Together, there are no challenges we cannot meet. The best is yet to come.”
If re-elected, Biya will be 100 years old.
Meanwhile the political landscape is getting more and more turbulent. In August, Cameroon’s constitutional council validated a decision to bar opposition leader Maurice Kamto from the race. The ruling was based on an internal crisis within the Manidem party which led a faction to nominate another candidate.
Out of 81 candidates who applied to run for the presidency, only 7 were cleared to challenge Biya. Critics say the exclusions show the flaws in Cameroon’s electoral process and further shrink the political space ahead of the crucial election.
Brenda’s bold move adds a personal dimension to the growing discontent as many Cameroonians ask if Biya’s time has come.
