Dr. Nancy Macharia Secures New Job Following Her Exit from TSC.
Just a day after formally stepping down from the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), Dr. Nancy Njeri Macharia has been nominated as the Chairperson of the Murang’a County Public Service Board. Her appointment was announced by Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata. She now awaits vetting by the Murang’a County Assembly before assuming her new duties.
In a memo dated June 1, 2025, Dr. Macharia confirmed that she had proceeded on terminal leave ahead of her scheduled retirement on June 30, 2025. She indicated that her leave would allow for a smooth transition, having served in multiple capacities within TSC for a decade.
In her statement to the staff, she announced that Ms. Eveleen Mitei had been appointed as Acting TSC CEO, urging her colleagues to offer the incoming leader full support. Dr. Macharia emphasized her confidence in the new leadership and stated that she believed the Commission was in capable hands.
Dr. Macharia’s departure signals the end of a significant era at the TSC. Her tenure saw numerous reforms in Kenya’s education sector. Over the years, she played a central role in strengthening teacher management and policy implementation. One senior official at the Commission noted that her leadership had shaped the transformation of the education system in fundamental ways.
“I leave this Commission with a sense of fulfillment and pride,” said Dr. Macharia. “We have made incredible strides in teacher professionalism and accountability.”
Meanwhile, the process of recruiting a substantive CEO has faced legal setbacks. The Employment and Labour Relations Court in Mombasa issued interim orders suspending the ongoing recruitment.
The injunction followed a petition filed by Mombasa resident Thomas Mosomi Oyugi, who alleged constitutional breaches and discriminatory elements in the selection process. Justice Kebira ruled that the status quo as of May 27, 2025, at 5:10 PM, should be maintained until further court directives.
Attention has now shifted to the new Acting CEO, Ms. Eveleen Mitei, whose experience spans decades in the education and human resources sectors. Mitei holds a Master of Science in Human Resource Management from the University of Manchester, alongside a Bachelor of Education. Her journey with TSC began in 1994 as a teacher before she moved into administrative roles in 1999. Most recently, she served as Director of Teacher Discipline Management.
“She’s an administrator who demands high standards and enforces discipline,” remarked a senior HR officer. “Her track record speaks for itself.”

Mitei is particularly known for her strict handling of disciplinary cases, having deregistered over four hundred teachers for sexual misconduct in the past three years. Her no-nonsense leadership style is expected to define her tenure at the helm of TSC, even if in an acting capacity for now.
As Ms. Mitei takes over, all eyes are on her ability to maintain momentum and continue the reforms initiated by her predecessor. The role of TSC’s CEO involves shaping strategic direction and overseeing policy execution. In a public advert issued earlier, TSC clarified that the CEO would be responsible for implementing Commission strategies, making the role both pivotal and high-stakes.
With pending legal proceedings and an acting CEO at the helm, the Commission enters a period of both transition and scrutiny. Teachers across the country remain alert, watching developments unfold as leadership shifts take effect.
