Former Chelsea Midfielder Oscar Hospitalised with Heart Complications After Collapsing During Training
Former Chelsea midfielder Oscar has spoken for the first time since being rushed to hospital in Brazil after suffering heart complications during training.
The 34-year-old fell ill in his hometown of São Paulo earlier this week, prompting fears for his health among fans and former teammates. According to Brazilian outlet Globo Esporte, the incident occurred while the midfielder was undergoing pre-season physical tests at São Paulo’s Barra Funda training centre on Tuesday.
Witnesses reported that Oscar lost consciousness for nearly two minutes while using an exercise bike before being treated by on-site medical staff. The club has since confirmed that he was transferred to Einstein Hospital Israelita, where he remains under observation.
In an official statement, São Paulo said:
“Oscar has cardiological changes and was promptly attended to by the club’s medical team from Einstein Hospital Israelita, who were present at the site. The player was then taken to the hospital, where he is currently in stable condition and remains under observation for further tests to clarify the diagnosis.”
The club’s medical department has not disclosed further details about the diagnosis but assured supporters that the player’s condition is stable.
Reports in Brazil have suggested that Oscar may now be considering retirement following the latest health scare. His wife, Ludmila Emboaba, who shares two children with the former Chelsea star, is believed to have encouraged him to bring his long playing career to a close.
Oscar last featured for São Paulo on July 27 in a clash against Corinthians but was forced off after just 20 minutes due to a back injury that resulted in a fractured vertebra. It was during that period that heart abnormalities were first detected, though he was later cleared to return to full fitness. Since then, he has remained an unused substitute twice—in matches against Fortaleza and Palmeiras at the start of October.
After the scare, Oscar broke his silence on social media, thanking fans for their support.
“Thank you very much for the messages and prayers. Everything will be fine, God willing,” he wrote on Instagram.
Oscar’s professional journey has been nothing short of remarkable. Born in 1991, he began his career at São Paulo before moving to Internacional, from where Chelsea secured his services in 2012. Arriving in the same summer as Eden Hazard, Oscar quickly established himself as one of the Premier League’s most promising midfielders. During his five-year spell at Stamford Bridge, he made over 200 appearances, winning two Premier League titles, a Europa League trophy, and a League Cup.
Following his successful stint in London, Oscar made headlines in 2017 with a high-profile move to the Chinese Super League side Shanghai Port, where he became one of the highest-paid footballers in the world. After seven seasons in China, he returned to São Paulo earlier this year on a contract running until 2027.
Chelsea also issued a message of support for their former player, stating:
“The thoughts of everyone at Chelsea FC are with our former player Oscar and his family at this difficult time.”
While his future in football remains uncertain, fans around the world have expressed relief that the midfielder’s condition has stabilised, wishing him a full recovery and strength in the days ahead.
