Former EALA MP Abubakar Zein Abubakar Dies in Nairobi as Tributes Pour In
Former East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) Member of Parliament and Head of the Wiper Party Presidential Secretariat and Campaign, Abubakar Zein Abubakar, has died.
Abubakar passed away on Thursday, July 9, 2026, at Avenue Hospital in Nairobi, bringing to an end a distinguished political career that spanned regional legislative service and senior party leadership.

The cause of his death had not been made public by the time of publication.
His passing has sent shockwaves through Kenya’s political circles, with leaders from across the political divide beginning to pay tribute to a man widely regarded as calm, approachable and committed to public service.
Abubakar served as a Member of the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) from 2012 to 2022, where he represented Kenya in the regional parliament and participated in debates and legislation aimed at strengthening cooperation among East African Community member states.

Following his tenure at EALA, he remained active in national politics. In December 2024, Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka appointed him as the Head of the Wiper Party Presidential Secretariat and Campaign, entrusting him with a central role in coordinating the party’s political strategy ahead of the next General Election.
Until his death, Abubakar remained vocal on governance, leadership and public policy issues, frequently contributing to national political discourse.
As news of his death spread, condolences quickly began pouring in.
ODM Director of Communications Philip Etale was among the first leaders to mourn him, describing him as a humble and warm-hearted leader whose quiet personality left a lasting impression.
“Rest in peace, Mheshimiwa Abubakar Zein. A good man has rested. A man of few words with a great smile,” Etale said.
Further statements from political leaders, colleagues and the Wiper Party are expected as Kenyans continue to mourn the loss of one of the country’s experienced regional legislators.
Details regarding funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family in due course.
