Gachagua Breaks Silence on How His Ouster from Government Affected Wife Dorcas’ Boychild Mission
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has spoken openly about the personal cost of his removal from office to his family, revealing that his wife Pastor Dorcas Gachagua has struggled to sustain her highly acclaimed work to support vulnerable boys since he was kicked out of government.
Speaking to congregants on Saturday in Nyeri County during the ordination of his wife as a reverend, Gachagua said although he has found “peace” since his dramatic impeachment earlier this year, he has one major regret — Pastor Dorcas’ influence and capacity to help struggling young men has greatly diminished.
The programme, popularly known as the boychild initiative, was one of Dorcas Gachagua’s most notable projects when Gachagua was Deputy President. The initiative supported boys and young men battling addiction, homelessness and depression particularly in Central Kenya.
Reflecting on the impact of his exit from office, Gachagua told the congregation:
“We have enjoyed our humiliation in the office because we have moved on and we are happier people. The only regret I have is that Dorcas is not able to help as many boys as she would have wanted.”
He added that the reduced scale of the programme has weighed heavily on his family, saying:
“She is not able to do as much as she would have wanted but we support her as a family. As we are here, we feel very disappointed.”
Gachagua who now leads the Democracy for the Citizens’ Party (DCP) also used the occasion to lambast the government for not doing anything to address the resurgence of illicit brews in Central Kenya — an issue he championed while in office.
“We feel very disappointed that the work we did to get rid of illicit brews and remove the boychild from the trenches failed,” he said.
“Illicit brew is back and the boys are back to the trenches. We feel very sad.”
Despite his frustrations, the former Deputy President gave an emotional tribute to his wife, praising her unwavering commitment to ministry and community service. He described Reverend Dorcas as a “beacon of hope” whose spiritual guidance has guided not only their family but many households in the region.“She is a family person and she puts family first,” he said.
Gachagua also thanked their children for standing by their mother, **“I want to thank my children for agreeing that we will always support Dorcas.”
Reverend Dorcas Rigathi’s ordination is a new chapter in her ministry as her boychild programme faces new challenges. His remarks show the broader political and social impact of his removal from office — and his continued interest in issues affecting young men and Central Kenya.
