Gachagua Dismisses Rift with Matiang’i, Accuses Ruto of Infiltrating Opposition
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has denied claims of a rift with former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, saying President William Ruto is secretly planning to infiltrate and divide opposition parties ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking on Sunday, October 5, 2025, Gachagua alleged that President Ruto, working with the National Intelligence Service (NIS), is deploying operatives to infiltrate rival political groups — a move he compared to the tactics used during the 1992 elections.
“They are being used by William Ruto to cause problems within the opposition. When I was in office, he planted many people around me. When I left, I chased them away. Some have joined Jubilee, but they’re still being used to create confusion,” Gachagua said.
He warned opposition leaders against welcoming defectors, saying some of them may still be working for Ruto to cause divisions.
“If Ruto’s moles have left my party and joined your coalition, don’t embrace them. They’re still working for him and that only weakens the opposition movement,” he told them.
Gachagua cited the 1992 multiparty elections as an example, saying intelligence agencies then hyped Kenneth Matiba’s presidential bid to split opposition votes and weaken Mwai Kibaki’s chances.
“They created hype, planted people around Matiba and pushed him to run. That division cost the opposition dearly. The same script is being used today,” he explained.
He alleged that operatives have been assigned to influence key opposition figures, including Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, Fred Matiang’i and Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya to convince them to go solo.
“I hear they’ve promoted individuals to handle each of them — one for Kalonzo, one for Matiang’i and another for Natembeya — to persuade us separately that we can each go it alone,” Gachagua said.
He also accused Ruto’s agents of spreading false rumors that Kalonzo Musyoka has been holding secret meetings at State House, which he dismissed as propaganda to create mistrust within the opposition alliance.
“Kalonzo has been honest with us. These are meant to create suspicion and division. We must stick together and remove Ruto in 2027,” he said.
Gachagua’s comments come as the opposition is torn on how to choose a single presidential candidate for 2027. Some leaders want consensus now while others want an open nomination.
