Gachagua Slams Jubilee’s Confusing Stance Ahead of Narok By-Election
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has expressed confusion over the political alignment of the Jubilee Party, raising questions about whether the party is acting as part of the government or the opposition.
Speaking during an interview on Sunday, November 23, Gachagua criticised Jubilee’s decision during the Narok Town ward by-election, where their candidate, Joshua Ole Kaputah, initially withdrew from the race in favour of United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate Robert Kudate.
“I don’t understand because Wiper withdrew their candidate to support us, and the Deputy President did the same. As for Jubilee, I don’t understand them,” Gachagua said. “I don’t know whether they are in government or in the opposition, because I saw their candidate showing support to a UDA candidate.”
The former Deputy President highlighted the seeming contradictions in Jubilee’s political stance, noting that President William Ruto often emphasises collaboration with Jubilee Party leader Uhuru Kenyatta. Gachagua also pointed out that several Jubilee Cabinet Secretaries serve in the current government.
“The Jubilee ministers are in Ruto’s government. Sometimes Ruto even says he is working with Uhuru. There are also Jubilee MPs who are aligned with Ruto, so I honestly don’t fully understand whether Jubilee is in government or with us. But I’m not bothered, we will defeat all of them,” he added, expressing confidence that the Deputy President’s Candidate (DCP) Douglas Masikonte would secure victory in Narok Town.
The Narok Town by-election has seen a series of political twists. On November 11, Joshua Ole Kaputah, the Jubilee candidate, withdrew from the race and announced support for UDA’s Kudate. However, days later, Kaputah reversed his decision and re-entered the contest.
On Sunday, Jubilee Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni publicly joined Kaputah in campaigning for the Narok Town ward MCA seat. “Today, I joined the Jubilee Party candidate for Narok Town Ward, Hon. Joshua ole Kaputah, on the campaign trail here in Narok. It was inspiring to walk with a leader who understands the needs of the people and is committed to delivering real, practical solutions,” Kioni said in a statement.
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) is scheduled to conduct the Narok Town by-election on Thursday, November 27, 2025, with voters expected to choose between a field of candidates including the DCP’s Masikonte and Jubilee’s Kaputah.
