Rigathi Gachagua has warned President William Ruto’s allies against attempting to lure Kalonzo Musyoka into government, insisting that the Wiper leader remains committed to the opposition ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has issued a fresh warning to President William Ruto’s allies against attempts to persuade Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka to join the government ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Gachagua said Kalonzo remained committed to working with opposition leaders and would not abandon their political partnership despite renewed efforts by government figures to draw him into the Kenya Kwanza camp.
The Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader made the remarks during a church service at PCEA Kamangu Parish in Kikuyu Constituency, Kiambu County, on Sunday, November 1, 2026.
In a pointed message to government leaders seeking Kalonzo’s support, Gachagua jokingly described himself as the Wiper leader’s family spokesman and challenged those interested in negotiating with him to approach him first.
“If you need Kalonzo, come see me,” Gachagua told the congregation.
Gachagua insists Kalonzo will remain in opposition
The former Deputy President dismissed attempts by Ruto’s allies to convince Kalonzo to abandon the opposition, arguing that the Wiper leader had already committed himself to working with other political leaders seeking to challenge the President in 2027.

Gachagua described Kalonzo as a reliable political partner, saying their working relationship over the past two years had strengthened his confidence in the Wiper leader.
He also urged government leaders to stop making public appeals to Kalonzo, insisting that the opposition politician would not betray the people who had supported him.
Gachagua’s remarks come amid growing political activity as parties and individual leaders position themselves ahead of the next General Election scheduled for August 2027.
Government allies reportedly seeking Kalonzo’s support
Kalonzo has increasingly become an important figure in the political calculations surrounding the 2027 presidential contest.

His national political profile and support base in Ukambani make him an influential potential partner for either side of the political divide.
Several government figures have publicly suggested that they would be willing to engage him. Among them are Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua and President Ruto’s aide Farouk Kibet, who have been associated with efforts to persuade the Wiper leader to consider working with the government.
However, Kalonzo has repeatedly rejected suggestions that he is preparing to join the administration.
On Sunday, he also dismissed reports that he was being approached to join government, declaring that he intended to face Ruto at the ballot.
Opposition unity faces an important test
Although Gachagua and Kalonzo have publicly demonstrated cooperation, the opposition still faces the challenge of agreeing on a joint presidential candidate.

Other figures, including Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, have also expressed presidential ambitions, adding to the negotiations over leadership and the structure of a possible opposition coalition.
The timing of selecting a presidential candidate has also emerged as a point of discussion among opposition leaders. Some politicians favour an early decision to allow the preferred candidate sufficient time to organise a national campaign, while others want the process delayed to prevent disagreements from weakening the alliance.
The opposition will therefore need to balance individual ambitions, regional interests and party priorities if it hopes to present a united challenge in 2027.
What Gachagua’s warning means for the 2027 elections
Gachagua’s latest remarks underline the importance of Kalonzo in the unfolding political contest.
For the opposition, retaining Kalonzo within its ranks could strengthen its negotiations and help consolidate support across different regions.
For the ruling coalition, persuading the Wiper leader to cooperate with the government would potentially change the political balance ahead of the election.
Nevertheless, Kalonzo’s public rejection of joining government suggests that any political realignment involving him would face significant challenges.

The coming months are likely to reveal whether the opposition can turn its public declarations of unity into a formal agreement and a common campaign strategy.
Conclusion
Gachagua has made it clear that he does not want President Ruto’s allies attempting to lure Kalonzo into government. With the 2027 elections approaching, the Wiper leader’s political position could become one of the defining factors in the opposition’s efforts to build a united front against the President.
