Gospel Artist Wandeto Suffers Severe Burns in Suspected Political Attack

Kipchumba Murkomen has vowed that those behind the brutal attack on gospel artist Rachel Wandeto will be brought to justice after visiting her in hospital following the horrific incident that left her with severe burn injuries.

The Interior Cabinet Secretary visited Wandeto on Sunday evening after the singer was allegedly doused with acid and set ablaze by unknown assailants in the Mwiki area on May 17, 2026 — an attack that has sparked outrage and renewed concerns over politically motivated violence.

According to reports, the gospel artist suffered serious burns during the assault and is currently receiving treatment under close medical supervision.

Speaking after the hospital visit, Murkomen strongly condemned the attack, describing it as “barbaric” and unacceptable in a democratic society.

“I condemn this barbaric act that has no place in our society. Our investigative agencies are working hard to establish the motive and bring to book the perpetrators of the heinous act,” Murkomen said.

The CS suggested that the attack could be linked to Wandeto’s political views, warning that the government would not tolerate inflammatory rhetoric capable of inciting violence or radicalisation.

“We will take all measures to rein in divisive and incendiary political rhetoric, which is spreading hate and radicalization,” he added.

The shocking incident has triggered widespread condemnation online, with Kenyans demanding swift investigations and enhanced protection for public figures facing threats over political expression.

Security agencies have since launched investigations to identify the attackers and determine whether the assault was premeditated or politically motivated.

Wandeto’s supporters and fellow gospel musicians have continued to call for justice, describing the attack as a chilling reminder of the dangers posed by rising political intolerance in the country.
