Government Denies Reports of Boarding Fee Increase in Public Senior Schools

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos Ogamba has denied reports that the government has raised boarding fees in public senior schools.

In a statement on Thursday, November 6, Ogamba said no changes had been made to the existing fee structure and urged the public to disregard the reports.

“Our attention has been drawn to reports in sections of the media suggesting that boarding fees payable by learners in public senior schools have been revised upwards,” he said. “Parents, learners and the general public are hereby notified that there has been no revision of boarding fees, or any other fees, payable by learners.”

He said the ministry’s official guidelines on school fees remain in place and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to funding education through capitation.

“The Government will continue to fulfil its constitutional duty of providing capitation for learners in senior school. The approved rate of capitation for this level remains Ksh22,244 per learner per year,” Ogamba said.

The statement comes a week after Ogamba announced that national examination results for primary and secondary levels will be released between December and January.

He also said the ministry was finalizing verification of capitation data to eliminate ghost schools and inflated student numbers.

Ogamba revealed that funds were being disbursed progressively as schools completed verification, noting that 990 schools had not submitted enrolment data.

“We released 50% of the capitation based on term two numbers to verify physically if these schools exist,” he said.
