Government Opens Applications for 1,000 Digital Literacy Internship Positions

The Government of Kenya, through the Ministry of Education and the State Department for Basic Education, has opened applications for 1,000 paid internship positions under the fourth cohort of the Digital Literacy Programme (DLP). The Public Service Commission (PSC) announced the vacancies via a public notice, inviting eligible university graduates to apply online before the deadline of Monday, June 23, 2025.

The Digital Literacy Programme internship is aimed at equipping recent graduates with practical experience while simultaneously strengthening the implementation of digital learning across public primary schools. Selected candidates will be deployed to Sub-County Education Offices, where they will support the use of digital tools in teaching and learning processes.

According to the PSC, “In addition to acquiring practical skills and knowledge, the interns will play a critical role in supporting virtual learning and other related digital platforms.”

To be eligible, applicants must have completed their studies no earlier than 2020. They should hold a Bachelor’s degree in Education with a specialization in Information Communication Technology (ICT), a Bachelor’s degree in ICT, or a Diploma in ICT or ICT Integration in Education from a recognized institution.

In addition to academic qualifications, candidates are required to demonstrate knowledge in areas such as networking and infrastructure, applications development, information security, and project management. The ability to integrate ICT with education through e-learning and content development is also a key requirement. Furthermore, applicants must be capable of conducting research and developing innovations that align with the goals of the Digital Literacy Programme.

The PSC emphasized that ideal candidates must be willing to work on a full-time basis and be deployed to any Sub-County Education office across the country.

The duties of the interns will include supporting e-learning and digital content creation in accordance with the official schemes of work. They will also be responsible for training and assisting primary school teachers in the use of digital devices, promoting safe and ethical use of technology in learning, and integrating ICT into daily teaching, learning, and assessment.

The internship programme will run for 12 months and will not be renewable. Interns will receive a government-determined stipend for the duration of their service. Upon successful completion, participants will be awarded a certificate by the State Department for Basic Education.

The Digital Literacy Programme is a flagship initiative launched in 2016 as part of Kenya’s Vision 2030 agenda. It was developed by the Ministry of Education in collaboration with the ICT Authority and the Teachers Service Commission (TSC). The programme is designed to enhance the quality of education by integrating technology into teaching and learning at the primary school level.

The objectives of the DLP include equipping both teachers and learners with essential digital skills, improving access to digital content, bridging the digital divide between rural and urban areas, and promoting the use of locally assembled digital devices. By doing so, the programme aims to modernize the education system and ensure that all learners are better prepared for the technological demands of the 21st century.

The fourth cohort of the DLP internship presents a significant opportunity for young professionals to contribute to national education reforms while gaining hands-on experience in the application of digital technologies in learning environments. With the application deadline set for June 23, 2025, eligible graduates are encouraged to submit their applications through the PSC’s online portal.

As the government continues to invest in digital infrastructure and human resource development within the education sector, initiatives like the DLP internship remain crucial for achieving long-term goals in equitable and inclusive digital education across Kenya.
