“Hide-and-Seek Game” IG Kanja Dodges Meeting With Kalonzo and Gachagua

Nairobi woke up to political heat on Monday.

What was supposed to be a formal meeting between opposition leaders and the Inspector General of Police turned into an awkward standoff outside the National Police Headquarters. And just like that, the story shifted from a routine appointment to full-blown political drama.

Leaders from the United Opposition, including former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, say they were denied access to meet Inspector General Douglas Kanja.

Instead? They claim junior officers were sent to face them at the gate.

And that didn’t sit well.

A Scheduled Meeting That Never Happened

Speaking to the press on Monday, February 16, Gachagua didn’t hide his frustration.

According to him, the meeting had been properly scheduled. The agenda was serious — tracking progress and seeking answers over the attack at Witima church. But when they arrived, the IG wasn’t there.

Worse still, Gachagua says, there was no formal engagement. Just junior officers stepping forward.

He didn’t mince his words.

“Despite scheduling an appointment with leaders of the United Opposition to review and track progress on critical issues, he chose, instead, the convenience of a hide-and-seek game, subjecting us to interactions with junior police officers.

“His continued refusal to act confirms a deliberate strategy to shield perpetrators and normalise impunity. We will return to your office. You can run, but you will not hide, Mr Kanja Douglas,” he stated.

That last line? It landed heavy.

You could almost feel the message — this isn’t over.

Kalonzo Points Finger at State House

Then came Kalonzo Musyoka. Calm, but firm. And direct.

He suggested the IG’s absence wasn’t random. In his view, it was calculated — and politically driven.

” Their absence was not accidental; it was a calculated choice. We know the Inspector General has received instructions not to avail himself. But let me be clear: no office, no uniform, and no political directive places anyone above the Constitution of Kenya,” Kalono stated.

It was a strong accusation. One that subtly dragged William Ruto into the picture.

The implication? That the no-show might have been influenced from higher up.

Whether that claim holds water remains to be seen. But politically, it adds fuel to an already burning fire.

“We Will Return With the People”

And just when you thought the tension couldn’t rise any further — Kalonzo doubled down.

He revealed that the United Opposition has already rescheduled another meeting with the IG for Friday, February 20. This time, though, it won’t just be leaders showing up.

“If this impunity persists, we will return with the people of Kenya. This lawlessness will only be confronted by the collective action of citizens who refuse to surrender their democracy.

That line carries weight. It hints at possible public mobilization.

And in Kenya’s charged political environment, that’s not a small thing.

Security Questions After Kitengela Rally

Beyond the Witima church attack, the leaders are also demanding answers about insecurity witnessed during a rally organised by Senator Edwin Sifuna in Kitengela on Sunday.

They want clarity. They want accountability. And they insist the police must act without political bias.

Kalonzo and Gachagua both emphasized one key point — the law must apply equally to everyone, regardless of political affiliation.

Simple principle. Big implications.

Police Call for Public Cooperation

Earlier, the police had issued a statement updating the public on investigations into the Witima church attack.

They urged members of the public to step forward with any information that could help identify those responsible.

For now, that’s where things stand.

An unanswered meeting. Accusations flying. A rescheduled showdown looming.

Will Friday bring dialogue — or deeper division?

We’ll find out soon enough.
