Huduma Kenya Explains Why You Cannot Change a Parent’s Name on a Birth Certificate as Questions Pour In

Huduma Kenya has clarified that a parent’s name captured on a birth certificate cannot be changed, offering fresh guidance to Kenyans seeking amendments to one of the country’s most important legal documents.

The clarification was issued during a live public engagement on Huduma Kenya’s official social media platforms after members of the public sought answers on whether it is possible to alter a parent’s details on a child’s birth certificate.

Responding to the queries, officials stated that while certain information on a birth certificate can be corrected or amended through the Civil Registration Services, a parent’s name is not among the details that can simply be changed.

“Kindly note that parent’s name in a birth certificate cannot be changed,” a Huduma Kenya official told members of the public during the session.

The announcement comes amid increasing inquiries from Kenyans looking to amend birth certificates due to clerical errors, changes in family circumstances, or inconsistencies between official documents.

Many parents have sought clarification following divorce, remarriage, adoption-related concerns, or other family changes, hoping to update details appearing on their children’s birth certificates. However, Huduma Kenya indicated that once a parent’s name has been officially captured on the document, it cannot be altered through the normal amendment process.

The agency did not, however, clarify whether typographical or spelling mistakes affecting a parent’s name could be corrected through a separate legal procedure, leaving some uncertainty for applicants facing genuine clerical errors.

What Can Be Changed?

While a parent’s name remains unchangeable, Huduma Kenya explained that several other details may be corrected if mistakes are identified.

These include:

  • Correction of spelling mistakes in names.
  • Addition or change of names where legally permitted.
  • Correction of gender markers.
  • Amendment of incorrect dates of birth.

Such corrections are processed through the Civil Registration Services under the Ministry of Interior and National Administration.

How the Amendment Process Works

Applicants seeking to correct eligible details on a birth certificate are required to submit supporting documentation to the Civil Registration Services.

Depending on the nature of the correction, applicants may be required to provide:

  • Birth notification from the hospital.
  • National identity cards of the parents.
  • A sworn affidavit explaining the error.
  • Supporting records such as school certificates, baptism cards or other official documents showing consistent use of the correct details.

Officials noted that applications involving major discrepancies—such as significantly different names or conflicting dates of birth—may require additional verification and could take longer to process.

The clarification is expected to help thousands of Kenyans navigating the birth certificate amendment process, particularly as the document remains essential for obtaining national identity cards, passports, school admissions and access to various government services.
