Ida Odinga Breaks Silence After UNEP Appointment, Calls Role an Honour

Ida Odinga, fondly known as Mama Ida, has spoken publicly for the first time since her nomination as Kenya’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

In a heartfelt address during a church service on Sunday, she expressed deep appreciation for the overwhelming messages of support and congratulations from Kenyans following President William Ruto’s announcement last week.

“To me it is an honour, and I am happy about it,” Mama Ida told the congregation, highlighting her gratitude amid the wave of public goodwill.

Navigating Life After Personal Loss

Mama Ida opened up about the profound personal changes she has experienced since the passing of her husband, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, in October 2025. She noted that her identity has shifted noticeably, with many now referring to her primarily as the widow of the former premier—a transition she admitted has required adjustment.

Despite these challenges and the increased public scrutiny, she remains resolute, drawing strength from her faith.

Facing Heightened Media Attention with Faith

As a Canon in the Anglican Church of Kenya (ACK), Mama Ida addressed the surge in media coverage surrounding her life and new role. “Every time I switch on the television, they are talking about me. Every time I buy the newspaper, it is ‘Ida Odinga’. But I don’t fear anything; God is with me,” she confidently shared with the worshippers.

Her remarks underscored a commitment to facing public attention with grace and unwavering trust in divine guidance.

Background of the Prestigious Appointment

President William Ruto nominated Ida Odinga for the diplomatic position on January 23, 2026, to fill the vacancy created when Ababu Namwamba was reassigned as Kenya’s High Commissioner to Uganda. Head of Public Service Felix Koskei described her as a distinguished educationist, civic leader, and lifelong advocate for social justice and gender equity.

Mama Ida’s career began as a teacher at Highway Secondary School in Nairobi, followed by over a decade at Kenya High School, where she built a reputation as a respected educator and mentor.

Stepping into Global Environmental Diplomacy

The nomination positions Mama Ida at the forefront of international environmental efforts, representing Kenya at UNEP’s headquarters in Nairobi. Her decades of public service, community leadership, and dedication to equity are expected to enrich her contributions to global environmental diplomacy and sustainable development initiatives.
