IEBC Warns of Fake Recruitment Ads Ahead of May By-Elections

IEBC Issues Urgent Warning Over Fake Job Adverts Ahead of Crucial By-Elections

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has sounded the alarm over a surge in fraudulent recruitment notices circulating online, just days before key by-elections scheduled for May.

In a public notice dated May 5, the electoral body revealed that at least four fake job advertisements are being widely shared across social media platforms, falsely claiming to offer employment opportunities within the commission.

The IEBC cautioned unsuspecting job seekers against falling victim to the scheme, stressing that all legitimate vacancies are exclusively published through its official recruitment portal.

“Beware of fraudulent job advertisements on social media. For accurate and up-to-date information, please visit our official website and our verified social media platforms,” the commission warned.

Fake Portals and Data Risks

According to the IEBC, the fraudulent notices mimic official communication by advertising positions for polling clerks and other election-related roles—timed strategically to exploit heightened public interest ahead of the polls.

The commission disclosed that the scammers are deploying deceptive tactics, including fake application forms, misleading announcements, and links directing applicants to third-party websites unaffiliated with the IEBC.

Officials warned that engaging with such platforms could expose applicants to financial scams or the misuse of sensitive personal data.

Heightened Alert as Polls Approach

The warning comes as the IEBC intensifies preparations for a series of upcoming by-elections set to take place across the country.

Voters in Emurua Dikirr Constituency in Narok County, as well as Porro Ward in Samburu County and Endo Ward in Elgeyo-Marakwet County, are expected to head to the polls on May 14.

Polling stations will open at 6am and close at 5pm, with the commission assuring voters that anyone in the queue by closing time will still be allowed to cast their ballot.

Meanwhile, another by-election for the Ol Kalou Constituency in Nyandarua County has been scheduled for July 16.

Public Urged to Stay Vigilant

The IEBC has urged members of the public to remain vigilant and to disregard any recruitment notices not issued through its verified channels, reiterating that it does not charge fees or use unofficial platforms during its hiring processes.

The commission’s warning highlights growing concerns over digital fraud targeting job seekers, particularly during periods of heightened electoral activity.
