Internet On Fire as Ruto Names Another Kalenjin to Head the Army
President Rutoโs recent appointments and promotions in the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) have caused a stir online with many Kenyans accusing the Head of State of using the military to advance ethnic and political interests ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The Ministry of Defence announced on Friday that Major General David Kipkemboi Ketter has been promoted to Lieutenant General and appointed as the new Commander of the Kenya Army. He replaces Lt. Gen. David Tarus who has been redeployed to the National Defence University-Kenya as Vice Chancellor.
While the Ministry says the move is part of a broader leadership restructuring within the KDF and follows recommendations of the Defence Council, Kenyans on social media were quick to read between the lines, highlighting Ketterโs Kalenjin heritage โ the same ethnic group as President Ruto โ as a point of contention.
โItโs a Kalenjin Affairโ
A common phrase in the online discourse is โItโs a Kalenjin affair,โ a pointed criticism that appointments in security and government sectors are being handed to individuals from the Rift Valley region.
One user, Georges George, simply wrote โItโs a kalenjin affairโ while others like Vincent White and Carls Masio Benjamin echoed the sentiment, saying Ruto is favoring his ethnic base. โJaza wakale kwa security but they canโt save u,โ wrote Kingori Joe implying the appointments are meant to consolidate power not national security.
Political Calculations for 2027?
Many Kenyans believe these appointments are part of Rutoโs long game to secure re-election. โChosen to defend him 2027,โ wrote Fidel Ndemo. Others like Bruno Jackuzzi said, โItโs called fortifying the walls ahead of the 2027 showdown,โ alluding to a possible militarization of politics.
Comments like โRuto is playing chess cards,โ and โItโs a game of thrones,โ suggest the public sees these moves as political rather than merit based.
Tribalism Accusations and Irony
What was striking was the hypocrisy in the presidentโs camp accusing Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua of tribalism and yet they are doing the same. โAnd you all saying Riggy G is tribal,โ wrote Julius Muteve while Everlyne Mutindi added, โThen you hear some people labelling our big cousin Gachagua as tribal!โ
Many comments were laced with sarcasm and dark humor. โWhat would happen if all Kenyans changed their names to Kips or Cheps? Might get lucky and be promoted,โ wrote Karroleen Musyoka. Others used proverbs to mock the situation: โWhen an elder stops making sense, the children tend to think that he is one of them,โ said Joyline Shantel while Tonnie Machaa wrote, โA brave man is the one that farts in public even if he has diarrhea.โ
Why It Matters
The online noise shows how fragile Kenyaโs ethnic politics are and how the public is watching state appointments. Kenyaโs military is constitutionally supposed to be apolitical and national in character. Allegations of ethnic favoritism in its leadership will erode public trust in the neutrality and unity of the armed forces.
Moreover, these debates show growing mistrust between the public and political leadership especially when actions โ no matter the intention โ seem to serve narrow tribal interests over national unity.
With 2027 elections around the corner, the Presidentโs every move is being watched through a political lens. These reactions may be online but they reflect deeper anxieties about governance, inclusivity and militarization of power.
As one user put it: โThe only system working in Kenya is your urinary system.โ Behind the joke is a serious question โ is the government listening?
Editorโs Note: Online comments donโt always represent the general public but the volume and consistency of this reaction shows thereโs a lot of concern among citizens.
