DCI detectives have arrested a 17-year-old suspect linked to the menengai child murder of 3 year old Margaret Wanjiru Kirathe in Menengai, Nakuru County. The arrest was announced on Monday in a statement by the DCI.
The incident happened near PCEA Shalom Mchanganyiko Church where the child was found unconscious about 50 meters from the church premises. Despite efforts to save her, Margaret was pronounced dead upon arrival at Kenlands Hospital.
“Officers received a distress call about a child found unconscious about 50 meters from PCEA Shalom Mchanganyiko Church. Unfortunately the child was pronounced dead upon arrival at Kenlands Hospital,” part of the DCI statement read.
According to preliminary investigations, the suspect Lizz Njeri Mwangi allegedly lured the child from the church to a secluded area where she strangled the child using a piece of cloth. The motive behind the killing is still under investigation.
The suspect was arrested at her residence in Judea Village, Menengai Sub-Location, within Kiamaina Ward after detectives reviewed CCTV footage and gathered intelligence on her whereabouts.
“Acting on intelligence, officers launched an operation that led to Lizz Njeri Mwangi’s arrest at her residence in Judea Village, Menengai Sub-Location, within Kiamaina Ward. Upon arrest, officers recovered the clothes the suspect wore during the commission of the offence as captured on CCTV and the piece of cloth used to commit the heinous act,” the DCI added.
