Oburu Oginga Marks 83rd Birthday in Private Celebration as Health Speculation Swirls

ODM leader Oburu Oginga has marked his 83rd birthday in a private celebration, with photos showing him alongside family members and Nairobi Hospital staff amid weeks of public speculation about his health.

Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Oburu Oginga has marked his 83rd birthday in a private gathering, with photographs emerging of the veteran politician celebrating alongside his two wives and a group of Nairobi Hospital staff.

The images, obtained by Kenyans.co.ke, show Oburu participating in a cake-cutting ceremony as he marked the occasion on Wednesday, 15 October.

The celebration comes amid weeks of speculation about his health, with the latest photographs drawing attention to his first reported public appearance during the period.

Birthday coincides with Raila Odinga’s death anniversary

Oburu’s birthday carries added significance this year as it falls on the same date his younger brother, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, died in 2025.

Raila’s death on 15 October 2025 marked a major moment in Kenya’s political history, leaving behind a long-standing political legacy and a family closely associated with the country’s democratic journey.

In a message marking his birthday, Oburu reflected on the emotional significance of sharing the date with his late brother’s death anniversary.

“Today, October 15, is far more than just a date on the calendar, it is a sacred intersection of life and eternity,” the statement read.

“Marking another year of my own birth on this very day brings a bittersweet reflection, knowing it is also the date my beloved younger brother, Baba Raila Amolo Odinga, departed to be with the Lord.”

Oburu pays tribute to his late brother

The ODM leader also described the bond he shared with Raila, saying his brother’s death had given the birthday a deeper personal meaning.

“To have been born on this day and for you to have departed on this same date is a divine testament to the invisible thread that binds our souls. Physical separation cannot touch a brotherhood written in the heavens,” he added.

The message combined a celebration of his own life with a tribute to Raila, whose death anniversary fell on the same day.

While the photographs have offered a glimpse of Oburu’s birthday celebration, no medical conclusions can be drawn from the images alone. Further information about his health would need to come from an official statement or a verified source.
