IPOA Reveals Post-Mortem Findings in Simon Warui Custody Death
The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has released new information on the death of Simon Warui who died while in police custody at Central Police Station in Mombasa.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, September 23, IPOA said the post-mortem report shows Warui died from cardiorespiratory collapse due to a fractured and dislocated neck, consistent with injuries from a fall from height.
The oversight agency said its investigation team has started collecting evidence, interviewing witnesses and reviewing police procedures on Warui’s detention.
“IPOA reminds that the safety and rights of individuals in police custody are paramount. We will ensure justice is served,” the statement read. “We condole with the family and will handle this matter with the seriousness it deserves.”
Warui, 26, from Umoja estate in Nairobi, went missing on Sunday, September 14. His family spent several days looking for him in Nairobi without knowing he had been taken to Mombasa.
The search took a dramatic turn when relatives found out Warui was being held in police custody at Central Police Station, Mombasa. By the time they arrived to secure his release, police told them Warui had died in custody.
Initially, authorities said Warui who was detained over theft charges had died during an alleged escape attempt. But the post-mortem report has cast doubt on this explanation given the severity of his injuries.
IPOA’s investigation will establish the circumstances of Warui’s death and hold anyone found wanting accountable.
