Iran State Broadcaster Deletes Post Claiming Kenya Could Join Middle East War

Iran State Broadcaster Sparks Alarm After Claiming Kenya Could Join U.S.-Israel Conflict as ‘Strategic Military Reserve’

Iran’s state-owned broadcaster has triggered concern and widespread online debate after publishing — and later deleting — a post claiming that Kenya could play a role in the escalating Middle East conflict involving Iran, the United States and Israel.

The controversial post, shared by the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) on its official X account on Thursday, July 9, quoted what it described as an international affairs expert who alleged that both Kenya and Nigeria possessed “strategic military reserves” that would “enter the field at the appropriate time.”

“Kenya and Nigeria also possess strategic military reserves that will enter the field at the appropriate time,” the post stated.

However, the broadcaster offered no evidence to support the assertion, did not explain what the alleged “strategic military reserves” were, and failed to clarify why Kenya and Nigeria had been linked to the conflict.

The post was later deleted without explanation, fueling speculation over whether it had been published in error, reflected the personal views of the analyst being quoted, or represented a broader editorial position. Neither IRIB nor Iranian authorities have publicly explained why the post was removed.

As of Saturday, July 11, the governments of Kenya and Nigeria had not issued official statements responding to the claims. Likewise, Iranian officials had not clarified whether the remarks reflected the official position of the government or were solely the opinion of the guest analyst featured by the broadcaster.

The deleted post quickly spread across social media, where it generated intense discussion among Kenyans, many of whom questioned why their country had been mentioned in connection with a conflict in which it has publicly maintained no military involvement.

Several users pointed out that Kenya has not announced any deployment of troops or participation in military operations involving either the United States or Israel, and that the country’s foreign policy has traditionally emphasized diplomacy, peacekeeping and multilateral engagement in international disputes.

One social media user wrote:

“Iran as a country should not be involved in a war with peaceful countries like Kenya. If this happens, then it could amount to an act of terrorism under international law.”

Other commentators urged the Kenyan government to reaffirm its commitment to diplomatic solutions and ensure the country is not drawn into the rapidly escalating tensions in the Middle East.

The incident comes amid heightened regional instability following continued hostilities involving Iran, Israel and the United States, with governments across the world closely monitoring developments. Despite the online speculation sparked by the deleted post, there is currently no publicly available evidence that Kenya is preparing to participate militarily in the conflict.
