Jubilee Party Names Matiang’i Deputy Leader, Endorses Him for 2027 Race
NAIROBI, october 30 — Kenya’s Jubilee party has gone and given former interior cabinet secretary Fred Matiang’i a big thumbs up, nominating him as their deputy party leader and officially endorsing him to put his name in the ring for the 2027 general election.
The decision to give him their backing came at a NEC meeting which was chatted to virtually by former president Uhuru kenyatta – though he wasnt there in the flesh, party insiders said.
“We’ve now formally accepted Dr Fred Matiang’i’s bid for the presidency and the NEC is all on board with the plan to let him carry our colours” said party secretary general Jeremiah Kioni in a statement following the meeting. “We’re also pleased to announce that Dr Fred Matiang’i will be joining the team as our new deputy party leader from now on.”
Not only that but the NEC also got around to filling some other vacancies in the leadership – and they’ve named Nakuru Town West MP samuel arama as their National Assembly Whip and Senator James lomenen to come in as the new Senate Whip.
Kioni said that the meeting covered some pretty important ground – including plans to do a thorough overhaul of the party’s grassroots operations , opening up new branches and trying to bring in some new blood by recruiting a load more members.
Matiang’i who has never actually had a job as an elected official had just left his role at the world bank in latin america a little while back to have another crack at the presidency.
He turned up to the jubilee national delegates conference back in september 26th alongside kenyatta – which pretty much signalled that he was getting a bit more serious about things with the party.
