Kalonzo Hints at Possible ODM Entry Into United Opposition Ahead of 2027 Polls

Wiper Patriotic Front party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has signalled a potential realignment within Kenya’s political landscape, suggesting that the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) could soon join the emerging United Opposition coalition in preparation for the 2027 General Election.

Speaking during a Sunday service at Christ Dominion Ministries in Kasarani, Nairobi, on December 7, 2025, Kalonzo said efforts to consolidate the opposition were gaining momentum and that several ODM figures had shown openness to cooperation.

Kalonzo commended former Agriculture Minister Kipruto Arap Kirwa, who currently chairs the coalition-building process within the United Opposition, saying Kirwa’s stewardship was helping shape a framework that would guide parties on fielding candidates in various regions.

“We have Kipruto Arap Kirwa, who is one of us in the official opposition and the chair of our coalition-building exercise,” Kalonzo said. “As we do this, we are looking at those models where DCP is strong in Kasarani, for example, and Wiper is strong elsewhere—maybe in Roysambu or another place—because it depends on the candidates we are going to get.”

He added that ODM’s involvement in the coalition now appeared increasingly likely, noting that the party’s younger, outspoken legislators could play a crucial role.

“Rather than have Wiper, DCP, DAP-K, Jubilee and ODM all competing separately—because I see ODM coming to us in a big way—we say that we get together and agree,” he told the congregation.

Kalonzo highlighted Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino as examples of “progressive voices” whose participation would strengthen a united front. He went further to suggest that if ODM eventually joined the coalition, Kenyans would have former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua to thank for helping foster cooperation between opposition parties.

“We have progressive voices like Senator Edwin Sifuna and Babu Owino. We are all going to get together, and when that happens, you will thank Riggy G,” Kalonzo stated. “That is the kind of leadership we want—where you don’t hide things in your jacket. You place everything on the table so Kenyans know that the time for real change is now.”

His latest remarks come just days after he dismissed reports suggesting Wiper had secretly agreed to cede all Nairobi seats to Gachagua’s Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) in a pre-election pact. The claims had circulated widely across social media, sparking debate within the broader opposition.

Addressing worshippers during a thanksgiving service in Machakos County on November 30, Kalonzo refuted the allegations as deliberate attempts to sow division between him and Gachagua.

“Watu waache hii propaganda wakisema ati Wiper imeachia DCP viti vyote Nairobi,” he said. “They are trying everything to bring conflict between Kalonzo and Rigathi Gachagua. That will not happen.”

The Wiper leader has increasingly positioned himself as a key figure in efforts to unify opposition forces ahead of the 2027 polls, with the anticipated coalition expected to reshape Kenya’s political contest in the coming months.
