Kalonzo Musyoka Appointed Leader of Azimio la Umoja Coalition
In a significant reshuffle aimed at strengthening its position ahead of future elections, the Azimio la Umoja – One Kenya Coalition Party has appointed Wiper Democratic Movement leader Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka as its new party leader. The changes, which also include a new Secretary General and Executive Director, were finalized during a joint meeting of the coalition’s Council and National Executive Committee on Monday, February 2, 2026.
The meeting, chaired by former President Uhuru Kenyatta, marked a strategic effort to reposition the opposition coalition following recent challenges, including the passing of its former leader Raila Odinga in October 2025.
Key Leadership Changes Confirmed
The coalition’s governing bodies unanimously approved the appointments, with documents—including meeting minutes, resolutions, and statutory Form PP7—promptly submitted to the Registrar of Political Parties.
- Kalonzo Musyoka elevated to Party Leader, stepping into the role previously held by Raila Odinga. This move is seen as leveraging his extensive experience in national politics and coalition-building to provide clearer direction and unity.
- Suba MP Caroli Omondi confirmed as the new Secretary General, replacing Suna East MP Junet Mohamed.
- Phillip Kisia appointed as the new Executive Director.
A formal notification letter dated February 2, 2026, was sent to Junet Mohamed informing him of his removal from the Secretary General position.
Statement from Azimio on the Reshuffle
In an official statement released after the meeting, Azimio described the changes as “a deliberate effort to reposition and revitalise the coalition.”
“The goal is to foster greater cohesion, effectiveness, and unity as the coalition advances its agenda for the nation,” the statement read.
The elevation of Kalonzo Musyoka is viewed as a deliberate step to anchor the coalition politically, drawing on his background as a former Vice President and his history in multi-party alliances.
Registrar’s Response and Next Steps
Registrar of Political Parties J.C. Lorionokou acknowledged receipt of the submission in a letter, confirming the documents from the February 2 meeting.
The office advised Azimio to publish the leadership changes in compliance with Section 20 of the Political Parties Act, Cap. 7D, which requires public notification of such updates.
Timing Amid Ongoing Coalition Dynamics
The leadership revamp comes at a pivotal moment for Azimio. The National Liberal Party (NLP), a founding member, recently petitioned the Registrar seeking clarity on the coalition’s current status.
Additionally, the changes follow the recent resignation of former Executive Director Raphael Tuju.
Analysts see the appointments as an attempt to inject fresh momentum and stability into the coalition as it prepares for the political landscape leading up to the 2027 general elections. With Kalonzo Musyoka at the helm, the focus appears to be on rebuilding internal unity and projecting a stronger, more cohesive opposition front.
