Kalonzo-Sifuna Lead 2027 Opposition Race in New Tifa Poll

A new opinion poll has thrust Kalonzo Musyoka to the centre of Kenya’s opposition politics ahead of the 2027 General Election, with multiple potential running mate combinations placing him firmly as the preferred face of a united anti-government ticket.

The survey, conducted by Tifa Research and released on May 14, 2026, tested several possible opposition pairings in what analysts say is an early indication of how the battle to succeed President William Ruto could take shape.

According to the findings, a ticket featuring Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka alongside Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna emerged as the most popular among the listed opposition combinations, attracting 28 per cent support.

However, the race appears far from settled.

A second pairing bringing together former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Kalonzo Musyoka followed closely behind with 25 per cent support, highlighting growing speculation over whether a broad cross-political alliance could pose the strongest challenge to President Ruto’s re-election bid.

The narrow gap between the two camps underscores an emerging debate within opposition circles: whether voters favour a traditional opposition coalition or a more unexpected alliance bringing together figures from rival political backgrounds.

But perhaps the most striking revelation from the poll is the strong showing by former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i.

A potential Kalonzo Musyoka–Fred Matiang’i ticket recorded the highest overall support at 31 per cent, overtaking the Musyoka-Sifuna combination and signalling Matiang’i’s continued political influence despite remaining largely outside active frontline politics in recent months.

In contrast, other proposed alliances struggled to gain traction among respondents. A pairing between Kalonzo Musyoka and former Justice Minister Martha Karua attracted only four per cent support.

The poll further revealed lingering uncertainty among opposition supporters. Around nine per cent of respondents said they preferred none of the proposed combinations, while three per cent remained undecided.

Notably, the survey did not specify which candidate in each pairing would contest for President or Deputy President, leaving room for future negotiations and coalition arrangements as the 2027 race gradually begins to take shape.

Political observers say the findings cement Kalonzo Musyoka as a central figure in opposition calculations, with nearly every leading combination revolving around his candidacy.

With more than a year before formal campaigns begin, the numbers are expected to intensify behind-the-scenes negotiations among opposition power brokers seeking to unite against President William Ruto and avoid a fragmented contest.
