KeNHA Announces Temporary Night Closure of Uhuru Highway, Issues Advisory to Motorists
The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced a temporary night-time closure of sections of Uhuru Highway and the Haile Selassie Roundabout, a move that is expected to disrupt traffic along one of Nairobi’s busiest transport corridors.
In a public notice issued on Thursday, January 15, KeNHA Director General Luka Kimeli confirmed that the affected road sections will be closed in phases between Friday, January 16, and Sunday, January 18, 2026.
According to the authority, the closure will affect CBC-bound lanes, Upper Hill-bound lanes, Mombasa-bound lanes, and Nakuru-bound lanes, with works scheduled to take place between 10:00 pm and 5:00 am each night.
“@KeNHAKenya wishes to notify the public that there will be a temporary closure of road sections on Uhuru Highway/Haile Selassie Roundabout,” the authority said in its statement.
“The closure is scheduled in phase intervals between 10 pm to 5 am from Friday January 16, 2026 to Sunday January 18, 2026.”
Second Closure Scheduled for Late January
KeNHA further revealed that a second round of night closures has been planned for the same section of the highway later in the month. The authority said the road will again be closed from Friday, January 23, to Sunday, January 25, 2026, during the same night-time hours.
“The closure is scheduled in phase intervals between 10 pm to 5 am from Friday January 23, 2026 to Sunday January 25, 2026,” KeNHA stated.
“This is to allow for reinstatement of the tarmac (asphalt concrete layer).”
The works form part of ongoing road maintenance and rehabilitation efforts aimed at improving safety and extending the lifespan of the highway, which carries thousands of vehicles daily connecting Nairobi’s Central Business District to Upper Hill and major outbound routes.
Motorists Urged to Use Alternative Routes
KeNHA has urged motorists to plan their journeys in advance and make use of alternative routes during the affected hours. Traffic police and marshals will be deployed on-site to manage flow and guide drivers through the approved traffic management plan.
“KeNHA advises motorists to follow the proposed traffic management plan and cooperate with the police and traffic marshal on site,” the authority said.
The agency apologised for any inconvenience caused and appealed for patience from road users as the works are carried out.
