KeNHA Warns of Fines and Imprisonment as Campaign Posters Flood Highway Signs

KeNHA warns politicians and their supporters against pasting campaign posters on road signs, says it’s dangerous and attracts heavy penalties.

In a statement released on Monday, September 8, the authority expressed concern over the increasing cases of vandalized signage in areas that are going for by-elections. According to KeNHA, campaign materials are being used to cover road signs, confusing drivers and increasing the risk of accidents.

“It has come to our attention that road signs have been defaced with posters, including those of candidates vying for positions in areas that are going for by-elections,” KeNHA stated. “This is a dangerous practice that can cause accidents and even fatalities.”

The authority also outlined the penalties for offenders. Anyone found tampering with road infrastructure will be fined not less than Ksh85,000 per incident, imprisoned or both.

KeNHA asked the public to be watchdogs and report cases of vandalism to nearby police stations or KeNHA offices. Citizens can also call the authority’s toll-free line, 0800211244, to report such incidents.

“As an Authority, we urge all Kenyans to protect road infrastructure and report any acts of defacing or vandalism,” the statement read.

This comes as political activities heat up ahead of by-elections. IEBC has also released new rules for candidates. Among them, independents must show proof they are not affiliated to any political party and provide clearance from the Registrar of Political Parties at least three months before contesting.

Also, candidates must submit the names of their election agents 14 days before voting, while campaigns will start from November 26, 2025, to November 24, 2025, between 7:00 AM and 6:00 PM daily.
