Kenya Kwanza Nominated MP Denar Joseph Hamisi Dies Aged 56

Kenya Kwanza Alliance’s nominated Member of Parliament Denar Joseph Hamisi has died at the age of 56, the National Assembly confirmed on Saturday morning.

The announcement was issued by Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, who described the news as a profound loss to Parliament and to the country. Hamisi, who represented the Amani National Congress (ANC) in the National Assembly after the 2022 General Election, passed away at around 7am.

“It is with profound sorrow that I hereby notify the House and the entire Parliamentary fraternity of the untimely demise of Nominated Member, the late Hon Denar Joseph Hamisi, MP, who passed on today, Saturday, December 6, 2025, at about 7am,” the Speaker said in a formal communication.

Wetang’ula added: “On behalf of all Members and staff of the National Assembly, and on my own behalf, I extend heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the late Hon Denar, and to all who experienced his humility and unwavering dedication to serving the nation and community.”

Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, the former ANC party leader, led tributes to the late MP, describing him as a principled and dependable public servant whose integrity earned him widespread respect. Mudavadi noted that Hamisi’s commitment to his ideals and his ability to unite colleagues around shared values made him a distinguished figure within Kenya’s political sphere.

In Parliament, Hamisi served on the Departmental Committee on Sports and Culture, as well as the Select Committee on National Cohesion and Equal Opportunities. Colleagues praised him for his seriousness of purpose, attention to detail, and his focus on consensus-building.

Born in 1969 in Kinango, Kwale County, Hamisi attended Mombasa Baptist High School, where he completed both his Kenya Certificate of Education (KCE) and Kenya Advanced Certificate of Education (KACE). He went on to pursue higher education at the United States International University (USIU), earning a Bachelor of Science in Tourism Management in 2000 and a Master’s in International Business Administration in 2002. In 2006, he obtained a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Nairobi.

Before joining Parliament, Hamisi built an extensive career across both public and private institutions. His roles included Director of the Coast Development Authority (2007–2010) and Commissioner at the former Electoral Commission of Kenya (ECK) between 2007 and 2008. He later served as a director at the Kenya Airports Authority (2009–2012) and held senior leadership roles at the Kenya National Accreditation Service (2011–2012). He was also a council member at the University of Nairobi (2013–2018) and Moi University (2021–2022).

In the wake of his death, Speaker Wetang’ula appointed a parliamentary team to work with the family to coordinate funeral arrangements. The committee will be chaired by Kilifi North MP and Deputy Leader of the Majority Party, Owen Baya.

Further details on burial plans are expected in the coming days as Parliament prepares to honour the late legislator’s service and contributions to national development.
