Kenya Meteorological : Persistent Rain Forecast Across Much of the Country as Christmas Approaches
Kenyans have been urged to brace for wet weather over the festive period after the Kenya Meteorological Department issued a five-day forecast predicting persistent rainfall in several regions.
The outlook, valid from December 20 to December 24, 2025, comes as millions prepare for holiday travel and outdoor celebrations, with experts warning that localised showers and thunderstorms could disrupt plans.
In its latest update, the Kenya Met Department highlighted that rainfall is expected to continue across key areas, including the Highlands east and west of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Coastal strip, Northeastern Kenya, and the Southeastern lowlands.
“Wet conditions and localised sessions of rain may impact holiday travel and outdoor celebrations,” the forecast stated, adding that residents should remain vigilant for potential flash floods in low-lying areas.
A separate wind warning has been issued for Marsabit County, where strong southeasterly winds exceeding 25 knots – equivalent to around 12.5 metres per second – are anticipated, potentially posing risks to lightweight structures and maritime activities.
South-Eastern lowlands brace for daily showers
Counties such as Machakos, Kitui, and Taita Taveta are set for cloudy mornings with light rain, followed by sunny intervals.
However, the department warned: “Afternoon showers are expected daily, with thunderstorms predicted in places.”
The Coastal region, a popular destination for Christmas getaways, will stay characteristically warm with highs reaching 34°C. Despite the heat, morning showers are likely in several areas, with intermittent rain set to continue through Christmas Eve, potentially dampening beach plans.
Heat and thunderstorms in north
In the North-Western and North-Eastern regions, extreme heat will dominate, with maximum temperatures soaring to 37°C in counties including Turkana, Samburu, and Garissa.
“Saturday is expected to bring significant afternoon thunderstorms,” the forecast noted.
North-Western areas are likely to see more sunshine from Monday onwards, while North-Eastern counties could experience ongoing rain through Tuesday before conditions begin to ease on Wednesday.
The Kenya Meteorological Department advised travellers to monitor updates closely and take precautions on roads, particularly in rural areas where heavy rain can lead to slippery conditions or flooding.
As the nation heads into the peak of the festive season, the mixed weather outlook serves as a reminder to plan accordingly for both rain and intense heat in different parts of the country.
