Kenya Railways Announces Timetable and Fares for New Mombasa Commuter Rail Service
Mombasa Commuter Rail Service is now live! Kenya Railways has announced fares and schedules just after President William Ruto flagged off the project.
In its notice, Kenya Railways says a one-way ticket from Mombasa Terminus to Mombasa Railway Station in the central business district will cost Ksh50. The new service also stops at Miritini so more commuters can use the service.
According to the corporation, the commuter trains have been scheduled to match the arrival and departure times of the Madaraka Express which runs from Nairobi to Mombasa via the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR). This will give passengers seamless connections and more convenience when traveling between the two cities.
Mombasa Terminus to CBD
The new commuter rail will make five trips from the SGR terminus to Mombasa Railway Station.
- The first train departs at 4:10am and targets passengers arriving from Nairobi on the early Madaraka Express, stops at Miritini at 4:14am and arrives in CBD at 4:45am.
- A morning train leaves at 7:20am and arrives in the city by 7:55am.
- For afternoon arrivals, a 2:25pm train will connect with the 2:00pm Madaraka Express and arrives in CBD at 3:00pm.
- The last train departs at 9:00pm and links with the 8:30pm Nairobi arrivals and arrives in CBD at 9:35pm after a brief Miritini stop.
CBD to Mombasa Terminus
Meanwhile, four trains will run from Mombasa Railway Station to the SGR terminus.
- To connect with the 8:00am Madaraka Express to Nairobi, the first train departs the city at 6:25am, stops at Miritini at 6:53am and arrives at the terminus by 7:00am.
- A midday train leaves at 12:35pm and arrives in time for the 3:00pm SGR departure.* For evening travelers, a 5:30pm train will arrive at the terminus at 6:05pm.
- The last train departs the CBD at 7:20pm and arrives at the SGR station at 7:55pm before the 10:00pm Nairobi train.
Affordable and Convenient Travel
By synchronizing the commuter rail with the Madaraka Express schedule, Kenya Railways wants to offer a seamless and cost-friendly travel option for residents and visitors. The Ksh50 fare is cheaper than most road options and reduces reliance on road transport which is often held up by traffic.
The Mombasa Commuter Rail Service is a major step towards improving urban mobility and Kenya’s long term transport infrastructure.
