“Kenya Token” Post on Raila Odinga’s Account Sparks Hack Claims

A strange post from Raila Odinga’s verified X account has got Kenyans wondering if the ODM leader’s account was hacked or if Kenya is indeed going into crypto.

Kenyans were left wondering on Thursday after a post on Raila Odinga’s official X account announced the coming out of a new national digital currency called Kenya Token.

The post said the coin will be launched soon as part of efforts to modernize the financial system and boost economic growth. It also asked Kenyans to join an update channel on Telegram and that the token will be launched on Solana blockchain.

“We are pleased to announce that Kenya Token will soon launch. A new digital asset to improve our financial system and support economic growth. Kenya is stepping up to lead Africa into the crypto revolution, embracing digital finance and shaping a more crypto-friendly future. The official token will be launched on @solana,” read the post.

Public Reaction

The announcement immediately sparked widespread skepticism online with many Kenyans saying Odinga’s account had been hacked by scammers to push a cryptocurrency scam.

One user, @moneyacademyKE, wrote: “Somebody hacked Raila Odinga’s Twitter account and made a deep-fake to scam people. Don’t fall for it, it’s a scam.”

Another, @arnoldi254, simply asked: “Hacked?”

Others went further, warning that such schemes are linked to international fraud. “Our Japanese brothers are very good at hacking big accounts to launch their fake tokens on Solana. Kenyans beware,” said @MuchiriGichuri.

Some users however entertained the idea that Kenya could be making a bold move into crypto. “That’s awesome to see 👏 Kenya stepping into crypto on Solana feels like a big step forward. Curious to see how $KENYA grows,” tweeted @Based_Nuel.

But most of the replies were skeptical, with several netizens pointing out that the images attached to the post looked AI-generated. Others asked why Odinga and not government officials like John Mbadi would make such a big financial announcement.

At the time of publishing, neither Odinga nor his team had issued a statement on whether the post was genuine or a security breach.
